Hi all,
Just a few photos of a current project…backdating a 1/72 Tamiya F4U-1D kit to an early build F4U-1A. I am building Tom Blackburn’s mount, “Big Hog”, that he flew with VF-17. This requires changing the cowl flaps to the full circumference type, shortening the tail strut, deleting the wing and belly pylons, replacing the kit wheels with True Details resin examples and removing the tread pattern, using the Hasegawa F4U-1 prop and modifying it to the early thin cord type modifying the tail gear doors, and using the early style blown canopy. I also added seat belts, cowl flap actuators and cable to backside of cowl flaps, minor detail to tail strut, plumbing to main wheel wells, drilled out exhausts, added spark plugs and ignition wires to engine. Other details will be added along the way.
Hope you like it so far!

Happy modeling all!

looks very nice so far and the radial engine looks to be very well detailed!
keep up the good work
Beautiful work, Joe! I like it! [:)]
Although you’ve probably heard it all before, please excuse me saying this [:D], but if your wife ever comes to you and says she’s needing a “younger man”, all you have to say is; “That’s me baby!” [:D]
Great build, look forward to seeing it come together! [:)]
Take care,
Frank
LOL Frank…yeah, I keep telling her no matter how old I get, I’ll always be a younger-man!
Thanks for the feedback guys,
Joe
Looks very nice so far. That R-2800 looks nicely detailed. Keep up the good work.
Looking great so far Joe. Can’t wait to see more.
Is that the salmon colored prirmer in the wheel wells? What did you use?
Thanks guys…Wayne, the wheel wells are the early salmon colored primer on this bird…I started with testor’s light tan and added a bit of red and ModelMaster Leather to get a color equivalent close to FS 32276. Its hard to know exactly but it looks pretty “salmony” to me. [8D]

Your bird has a good look to her Joe, nice work

Looks like you’re off to a great start Joe, can’t wait to see more.

Corsair is a favorite a/c of mine and I have several to do. The salmon primer has me curious. I believe I read about it on IPMS Sweden, but none of my other references talk about it. And what little I have seen about Big Hog doesn’t mention it either. Most of the modelers who post here use interior green, or the underside color. What made you decide to use the salmon? I’m just trying to add to my knowledge.
Looking good, keep us posted!
Looks good so far. Should be another beauty.

Wayne, actually all three colors may be correct. The wheel wells were sometimes sprayed the belly color in the field though yellow zinc chromate would have been the standard color for the interior surfaces at the factory. The salmon color is somewhat of an enigma. It is known that Vought used this color as a primer and was a mix of red and yellow zinc chromate. Its use was replaced with standard yellow zinc chromate fairly early in the production of the F4U-1A. Some say that no aircraft ever left the factory with the salmon color but evidence gathered from original wrecks seems to contradict this…the truth may never be known for sure…one of those “fog of war” issues. I do know that Blackburn’s “BIG HOG” was an early build F4U-1A and I wanted to try the salmon theory so this was a good a/c to do it on. In the end we often have to weigh the evidence and just take our best guess. I do try to get these things as right as I can but can’t say with absolute certainty that my conclusion is correct…but I can live with it.
Hope that helps Wayne!
