I’m back to work on my LTD 1/48 IAR-80 build. This is my second run on this kit, the first was built right out of the box with little modification. This one will be better. The cockpit has been fully detailed based on several original period photographs and I just finished the reflective gunsight.
While it may not be 100% accurate you need to remember that you are seeing it magnified about 400% actual size. That thing is mounted on the sharpened end of a toothpick.
I have two more kits that have not been started yet and am feeling the compulsion to convert one over to the in-line engine prototype …
Think that would be a different piece on the display shelf???
Now I’m working on some landing gear struts.
Here is a link to the current build.

Spent several hours today working on the landing gear. One strut is complete now and the second is underway. Here is a look at what I started with and what I ended with.
- Axel is drilled out.
- Brake line is fashioned from magnet wire and closely approximates postion of actual brake line.
- Oleo arm is salvaged from spares box - the kit does not include this piece.
- Kit wheels are replaced with True Details resin wheels.
When the gear are installed I’ll fashion a retraction arm and lay some hydraulic plumbing into the gear bay.
holy crap swanny, great work!
I think a Jumo-engined IAR would look very interesting and unique indeed!. I wasn’t even aware there were even tests done on this plane utilizing this engine.
Swanny, i don’t know what reference material you have for the cockpit, but you might want to pick up the video game IL2 and it’s addons. They have a flyable IAR 80 with what seems a pretty accurate cockpit, i actually might use some of these cockpit screenshots to fill in the blanks with some of my Japanese fighters.
I’m using some very nice period photos of the cockpit taken from four different angles in addition to original manufacture blueprints of the aircraft.
You the man![8D] Your work is incredible, and your an excellent teacher. Thank you for all your posts. When I grow up (if I ever grow up!), I wanna be just like you.[;)][bow][bow][(-D]
Looks good Swanny. Gonna pump some air into those flat tires ? [:)]

Have been busy working over the IAR-80. Both landing gear are done, the engine is in place and the cowling has been glued in place. The model has been primed with Mr. Surfacer 1200, little problems have been fixed and she has been primed again. Today I started preshading the aircraft and tomorrow some color should be going on.
Wow nice job swanny! Cant wait for more pics, your work is inspiring.
Swanny: why do you pre-shade with orange/brown instead of grey?
I’m using a dark earth tone to give a more subtle rusted effect on the panel line. I think that black or gray tends to be too stark. I’ve done this same base tone on a few models now and really like the end result.
Looking good so far Swanny. Keep us posted.

Great work Swanny! Keep the progress pics coming.

Darren.
Here is the lower wing area that gets painted RLM-76. Note that the upper camo scheme wraps around the rear fuselage - the lower sections are not RLM-76. The cowling has already been done with some Chrome Yellow. The pre-shading is just a step in the process, once all colors are done there will be some inner panel fading then a sludge wash and some pastel shadings along with some paint chipping, exhaust staining and gun blast staining. This entire paint process is going to take a little while.
I’m also starting to think I am not getting paid enough for this one which is too bad because I already settled on the price.
Did a little more work on the wing today before the heat got to me and I crashed in front of the A/C.
Really need to look into an A/C unit for the paint room.
