I too am back to modelling again, like dleeharrison. Although my hiatus was a bit off and on and more off than anything.
My older brother and I used to build all kinds of plastic models while we were growing up, but after he moved out I kind of slowed down and lost interest. I probably stopped at around age 13. A few years ago I was bit by the modelling bug again. Why this happened to me after I got married I’ll never know, but I found myself wandering off towards the model section at our local Hobby Lobby when my wife and I would go there. After a few wandering moments I grabbed a kit for an aircraft carrier, Yorktown I think. Probably not the wisest decision for someone that hadn’t done this in over 10 years. Well, I built the kit straight from the box and was just happy that I got it together without too many profanities. I didn’t even bother painting it or decaling it.
I moved on to another aircraft carrier, Saratoga. Same thing, built from the box, happy I got it together, didn’t bother to paint, or decal it. I built a couple of other boats after that and then lost interest yet again. Plus, the boats I had built got a little banged up in a moving incident. All of this was back in 1999 and then I was on yet, another hiatus. This one only lasted a few years.
I got bit by the modelling bug again around November of 2003. I have no idea what possessed me this time but it seems to be a worse case this go round (not that I mind [:D]). I picked up a Revell/Monogram B-25J Mitchell and built it straight from the box. I had a few minor problems but overall was happy I got it together. Originally I wasn’t even going to paint it. I thought I would just build it and that would be it for my modelling for a while. Something strange came over me though. I wanted to paint it, decal it, and finish the blasted thing.
I decided I would try to paint what I could of it and decal it. Wasn’t as bad as I had first invisioned. Didn’t get all of the decals on it but I did better than I expected I would. It’s not perfect but it’s the first kit that I built, painted, and decaled since the early 80’s.
After the B-25 I bought an F-84E kit (currently working on this), my wife got me a 1/144th scale of the Enola Gay for my birthday (actually completed it. PAined and decaled), and I bought a B-52 Stratofortress (not sure I should have now [:D]). I have a lot of work ahead of me so I’m sure I’ll be bugging you guys as I will most likely be asking for tips on the B-52.
Sorry for rambling on but I felt some background info would be interesting to you. If there is anything you’d like to ask me feel free.
Welcome to FSM, thenothing. Don’t worry about the long post. We love everything about plastic so we don’t find it boring. Anyway, I hope that you can find a home here (probably in the A/C forum). Good luck and enjoy.
[#welcome] to the FSM Community … stick around … read a lot … post a lot … next thing you know … you’ll be a scale modeling nut like most of the rest of us … [swg] !!!
Welcome Back, hopefully you’ll pick up some useful tips and get all of those models built with no problem!!! Careful, this site can be more addictive than modeiling itself!!![:P]
I was the same way when i got back into modeling… I just wandered into my old hobby store for the hell of it and i walked out with a nice 1/72 B-17… now i have trouble making my money last for the month!! [:)] You’ll find plenty of people who can help you out here (i wouldn’t be surprised if someone here was once the crew cheif of a B-52)! Welcome to the forums!!!
Thank you all for welcoming me, and I’m sure the bug has gotten a pretty good hold of me this time.
I’ll probably be popping in and out of this forum from time to time (more in than out most likely). Before I came to this forum I checked out others but this one seemed ot be the best, and most active. I haven’t been this heavily into builiding models in years but I’m glad I was bittne again. I’m just trying to get back into the swing of things and trying to remember the little tricks I used to know way back when. Some are coming back to me but on some things I’m lost and I kind of wing it the best I can.
I’m not sure why I started on planes this time around. I would also like to do some other ships and maybe a tank or two. I haven’t built a model tank in forever. I’ll probably move on to a tank after I tackle that B-52. I’m not sure I’ll even want to look at another plane for a while after that one. I’m sure I will though.
Welcome to the forum, thenothing. This site is almost as addictive as building. You must use caution, however, as it is EASY to superglue your fingers to the keyboard !
Have fun & enjoy !
I think most of us have had a hiatus from modelling every now and then…but then we come back to our senses. Have fun on here…hope to see some pictures too!
Welcome the FSM Forum. What you are suffering from has no cure, at one stage you were bitten by the modelling bug, there are periods of remission but Im afraid they dont last. The only treatment is to build models.
thenothing,
Welcome to our neck of the woods where the modeling bug has just about sucked all of us dry. You are in good company here, so relax and enjoy your stay!
