yes, i’m back into the hobby after a 30+ year hiatus–my how things have changed!!!

first off, i decided 4 yrs ago to " get with the program, again" after my retirement AND

a lot more time to indulge–over these past years, i’ve followed the hobby thru FSM, MMIR,

and other mags, as well as the internet–sadly, tho, i’ve not been able to enjoy the

convenience of a LOCAL HOBBY SHOP!!! both out of business

at any rate, over these past years, i’ve purchased several kits to occupy my time and find

it very relaxing & enjoyable—my modeling talents leave a great deal of room for improvement,

which brings me to some questions for the FORUM —

  1. any idea on " shelf life " of unopened super glue??? i’ve purchased quite a supply from different

stores when on sale—

  1. i’m ready to " step up to an airbrush" and wonder about the air compressor–is it nec to buy

one strictly designed for an air brush or will a basic $79.95 unit from the HOME DEPOT work?

  1. just getting into resin work–espec figures–what is best way/best tool for separating from the

“stub blocks”???

  1. PHOTO ETCH–a curse or a blessing??? well i’ts a curse for me the few times i’ve tried to

work with it!!! i have my ETCHMATE & can cut,trim & bend ok, but it’s a pain to get these

items glued to the project-- too much glue–not enough glue, poor curing!!!–probably the

most frustrating activity for me—

  1. finally, as a 67 year old " codger ", are there any more of you out there of my generation

who can relate to my rambling, but still very much enjoy " reaching back to childhood" or, as

my wife puts it " going thru my 7th midlife crisis" !!!

Quite a line-list you have there, but I’ll give it a try - - Shelf life, if it still flows easily, it shoudl be ok. If it looks thicker than it should be, toss it.

Get yourself an airbrush meant for miniature hobbyist work. My brand is Paasche, but there are a number of good hobby airbrushes out there (start out with a single action).

Resin, a good pair of hobby cutters / snips to start. Shave down as much as you can with the snips. Sanding afterwards.

Photoetch items can be troublesome, but many use them (me included). Practice practice. If you find they are too much trouble… scratchbuild is another option.

Codger?, well, , , I can relate to most ramblings, but I don’t really think you are going off too much. Modeling is a wonderful passtime. [For some] It is a great way to relax. It offers little snipits of history, built in, as well. And there is a great feeling when you “nail” a build too…

Welcome, Dalton Gang, from another old codger! I’ll turn 70 in another few months, and can still build a pretty decent model with the best of them. Started in the late 40’s with balsa wood “stick model” airplanes and solid wood Strombecker kits, and have kept on building on and off over the years with time off for college and raising kids, although I usually had something going on the workbench during those years. Now that I am retired, I have a lot of time to devote to the hobby and find it very helpful in keeping mind and body working and in tune. My only problem is running out of space to display my stuff. I have joined a local IPMS club and met some great people of my age with like interests. It’s all good! Enjoy!
