Back after a few decades

Hello everyone,

Like some of rest of you I’m coming back after many years to a hobby I enjoyed as a teenager. I’m in my fifties now and haven’t touched a model in 30 years. I primarily worked with 1/48th Monogram WWII aircraft kits along with a few tank models. I plan to work again with 1/48th aircraft and see where things go from there. Right now I’m trying to figure out who has the best kit of the aircraft I’m interested in. Also interested in best online source for kits and supplies as there isn’t a good hobby shop near my house.

I appreciate any suggestions and look forward to learning a lot.

Welcome to the Forms Javel! Glad to have you aboard!

You picked the right place. Members here are very knowledgeable and ready to help with any questions/problems that you might have. To find out about airplane kits, I would suggest you post your question in the “Aircraft” section of these Forums. I usually stick to WWI & WWII aircraft. I’m moving up from 1/72 to 1/48 as these old eyes and hands don’t work as good any more. I’ve been building for 69 of my 75 years. Planning to keep on building when I get to the great workbench in the sky.

Welcome and enjoy.

Welcome aboard Javel. Glad you could join us!!!

Welcome to the forum, Javel! We’ve followed similar paths, you and I, as far as the hobby goes. I built mostly Monogram airplane and armor kits as a kid, moving up to Tamiya armor just before I graduated from high school (in 1982). I also built Revell ships, as well as kits in other subjects from various makers.

Coming back in around 1999, I started out again with Monogram airplanes, though I’ve branched out to other subjects.

As far as good online sources go, there are several, and you may wind up using several. Here’s a short list of sources I use:

Squadron:A broad range of kits and supplies, though if you get into more specific or obscure subjects, you may not find it here. But always a good place to look

Sprue Brothers:Good selection of kits and supplies, frequent sales with e-coupons or discount codes sent out to their customer email list

Freetime Hobbies:Online hobby shop based in Georgia (USA).

MicroMark:Large selection of hobby tools and supplies, from model railroad supplies (very useful for us, too) to scale modeling supplies

As far as kit sources go, the second-hand market is a good place to look, too, whether it’s for a classic Monogram kit, or a newly-issued kit from a contemporary maker. I have bought a lot of kits off eBay, as well as at model shows and through trades and raffles at our club (Delaware Valley Scale Modelers).

Also, if there are no dedicated hobby shops near you, you might still look for the arts & crafts chain stores. Michael’s, AC Moore, and HobbyLobby all carry supplies that we can use, even though they aren’t dedicated model shops.

I hope that all helps, and I look forward to seeing your builds!

Best regards,

Brad

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I’ve been reading and reading trying to catch up on all of the changes in modeling.

Baron…Thanks for the great links… I graduated HS in '80.

Not having a decent hobby shop in the local area is annoying. I was spoiled in High school and college with excellent hobby shops for supplies and guidance. Tough trying to get my feet on the ground and sooooo many more options in kits, paints, etc.

Rough month at work, but I hope to catch my breath and start working on one of the 3 kits I have sitting here waiting on me.

Thank you all again!

Hi Javel This is Davecus. My situation is similar to yours. In my 50’s and back in it after almost 40 yrs. I used to like to build WW2 warships but now I want to build everything! I’m trying to narrow it down to a specific theme but it is hard to do . I’m going to build a variety of subjects and see what I like . I recommend Hobbylink for online models. Great variety!
