Baby Dinosaur Arrives

I saw this at a Gem & Crystal shop and I just had to have it on my 4th visit to the shop. It feels like molded plaster and a bit heavy. It’ll be my first time doing this, but I feel I have the knowledge and technique to pull this off. I’ve seen other photos of this finished dinosaur; that looks like a baby Brachiosaurus, so I’m going to give it my best shot. The first picture is a primed dino, followed by the scales wash.

Oh wow, that looks sharp! It’s so much fun to take something like this and transform it with a little paint and TLC.

Very neat! A chance to let your imagination run wild!

That looks realy cool. I will be watching this one closely. That is a great subject to work on.

What a great subject. I’ve never seen that before.

That’s a cool subject! I’ve never seen it before, either. You’re off to a good start.

It reminds me a little of the BBC’s “Walking With Dinosaurs”, that aired in the wake of the first “Jurassic Park” movie. It was kind of a “Mutual of Omaha’s Mesozoic Kingdom”. One of the stories was of a clutch of Diplodocus eggs that hatched, and it followed the hatchlings as they headed for the safety of nearby woods.

My first grandson would make us watch those shows endlessly. Good times.

UhOh!

Now, What do you feed it? You are off to a good start there. I am still working on my “Great White with divers and cage” This is the first Multi-Media wildlife kit I have had the pleasure to build-Something different for sure-Good luck!

Well thank you Gamera, GAF, lurch, Keavedog, Baron, cwalker & T.B. for your comments. I’m taking it slow and trying to do as much research as possible on this piece. After the scales wash, I drybrushed a green & brown color to bring out the scales. Afterwards I gave it a tint wash of “soot” again. I Dullcoated the piece to seal in the base coat, then I did the claws, which probably will be tweaked, then I applied another drybrush of Dark Yellow & Yellow Ochre, to really make the scales pop, followed by a dry brushing of Yellow Ochre & Red Brown in the creases and shadows. Another dullcoating will follow to seal it. I believe the mouth might be next followed by the eyes. As always all comments and critiques are greatly appreciated.

Hey T.B. I’m just glad that this is a herbivore dinosaur.[:D]

Well here are some updated work on the dinosaur. The front ribbing, shadowing and highlighting and of course, the mouth and eyes were done. As always critiques and comments are welcomed.

He/she’s (I can’t tell if it’s a boy or a girl dino) is coming along great there! Love the eyes and teeth- it’s adding a lot of character to the lil’ guy. Your work on the scales looks fantastic.

Thank you Gamera, for your comments. BTW, I can’t tell if its a boy or girl either. My wife want me to name it, so this way we have an idea of its gender.

I want to point out that the rear of the dino egg had an indentation, so using plaster mold I was able to fill it in as best as I could, smoothed it down a bit, then airbrushed an egg shell paint job. Then I used gel medium to produce the amniotic slime/mucus of the inside of the egg to give it the look of an actual dinosaur emerging from an egg. I really liked how it came out. I’m debating if I should add a little bit more thinned out mucus to the scales near the egg shell edge. I do have one more slime application to do and I need to color the base, and it should be done. Here are the WIP pics.

Man what an awesome subject! Dinosaurs are what got me into building models as a little boy, way back when. I still have quite the soft spot for them.

Very nice work. You could give it an androgynous name like Chris or Pat lol

Thank you all for your comments. Hey Keavdog, maybe I’ll call it Chris Brach(iosaurus).

OK, so the dinosaur has arrived. It’s a boy, Chris. I added some more amniotic mucus and painted the base. As always all comments and critiques are greatly appeciated.

Congratulations! It’s a dinosaur! [;)]

Gary

Yeah, and whatta smile!!! [:D]

Great job there Tiger! Always fun to see something different and you did a fantastic job on Chris Brach! [ht]

Thanks GAF & Gamera.
