B58 Hustler

So far, I am about a third of the way done with this model.

I have been looking for aftermarket kits and I can’t find any. Does anyone know where I can get some if they exist? I have the Revell Kit re-release.

marine one, you should consider joining the NMF group build. You have till Halloween. So take your time. I made it that way on purpose so that people can build large ticket items like the B-58 or others like it. I do not know of any stuff for that kit as I have never reserched it it is big though real big. A friend of the family’s ex brother in law built one and he still has it. It is huge.

I forgot to tell you to check out Great Models or Squadron, And let me give you a belated welcome to the forum. You have been on for only one month and have made almost half the posts I have made in one year. Welcome aboard.

Sorry Marine one, have had no luck either finding anything with on-line resellers. If you do find, say, someone who makes a resin cockpit, do let me know. Mine is still in the box.[:)]

Hey Marine1;
go to this website, www.greatmodels.com or www.squadron.com and go to search and type in 1/48 b-58 and hit enter, it should give you all the info and items pertaining on the kits, I’ve just ordered my B-58 cockpits about a month ago from great models web store

Engines and Things makes a back seat set that is so-so, see a review of that accessory kit on my website. Mike Grant Designs makes a very nice set of replacement decals and a set of replacement stencils for the kit, see the link to his site at my site Links Page. There is also a set of Fox One aftermarket decals out there.

B-58 Story.

I’m friends with Keith Ferris, the aviation artist. He related a story to me about when he was in the USAF and touring with the Thunderbirds, that he hooked up in Spain with a friend of his who was a B-58 pilot. Keith was offered a ride in the B-58 from Spain to the UK, where he’d hook back up with the Thunderbirds support aircraft.

He wasn’t feeling well and declined the flight, opting to fly with the T-birds later on in the afternoon. As it happened the B-58 that he was supposed to have ridden in had a nose wheel collapse on landing in the UK, and the strut came up through the cockpit floor and killed the back seater, which is where Keith would have sitting.

The only other B-58 story I can relate happened to a friend of mine, who was visiting Pima when a sudden thunderstorm opened up on them…he ran for the nearest cover, and once under the wing of the nearest a/c, looked up and realized it was a B-58…

The Hustler had a short life didn’t it? I think only ten years?

changes in tactics shortened the lifespan of the B-58 not the plane itself. Some of the speed records set by it have yet to be broken. It was and still is an awesome aircraft… I also have the Revell rerelesase in the box JOHN

I remember seeing a B-58 “hauling butt” at about 500 ft over the Vermillion Bay of South Louiana about the late 50’s. We were visiting my Dad who was doing siesmograph work in the bay for The Superior Oil Co. I believe I found a Lindberg kit that had a bunch of parts shortly after that and built it straight out of the box, no paint. All white plastic. Several years ago I saw the B-58 the Lone Star Museum has on dispay in Galveston, Tx. I have a couple of the 1/48th Monogram kits patiently waiting for a good natural metal finish.

I recently got to see s/n 55-666 at Rantoul, IL aka Octave Chanute AFB. in need of some TLC, but not really too bad. The museum DOES keep bird-proof screens on the wheel wells. Until recently, it had the serial number of “Firefly”, the New York-London record breaker. Also displayed is an ejection capsule. www.aeromuseum.org

Talk about fast I was stationed with the 507th fighter interceptor squadron in the early 60s and we had a F106a&Bs . WE were told to watch the end of the runway as one of F106s was chasing a B58 and we would have about six seconds to see it Well here comes the B58 and a few minutes more here come the 106 not even close to catching it

Ever hear of the B-58 showing off to Phantom pilots? The Hustler’s crew took off and did a barrel roll right above the field!

Can anyone tell me if the re-release by Revell of Germany , is the X- Monogram kit? Thanks for the help!!

I would be hard pressed to think otherwise they are the same company. It would be hard to think it would be someone else’s.

Has anyone watched the Discovery Wings Channel last Thursday night, on International Conflict they had the B-58 on there and it was really good refferance material for future builds

Try Jay Miller’s book (Convair B-58 HUSTLER, First Supersonic Bomber), published by Aerofax. I found my copy at a Border’s for $25.

Re: [tempestjohnny] “Some of the speed records set by it have yet to be broken.”
A (Mach 2+) B-58 “Hustler” was the chase plane for the (Mach 3) XB-70 “Valkyrie” because nothing else available was fast enough!

change in tactics wasnt the only thing that grounded the 58. She was a beautiful bird but she was a gas hog.

Just a quick note. The B-58A at Galveston is actually an ultra rare TB-58A, one of two that exist. I wish they would move it outside so I could get decent pics of it. Its a bear trying to get pics inside the hangar. The last time I saw it, it was only about 75% complete. Does any one know if they have the rest of the parts to resore it? It was missing the engine nacelles and other small parts.

BTW Is the B-58 kitted in 1/72? Other than the old Monogram one (I’m not sure what scale that one was)
