I’m about 99% done with my Monogram B-36. I noticed that for the anti-glare panel on the nose it called for olive drab. Is this correct? I always thought they were black. Thanks for the help in advance,

Can’t say 100% fer sher, but OD is probably right for the time period. I’d go with it.
The anti-glare panel on a B-36 should be flat black.

Thanks for all the responses. Based on Nwilliams’ B-36 link I’m gong to go with black. John P, I agree with you saying that O.D. probably would have been right for the time period but the color pictures don’t lie. I guess we both learned something, right?
Oh and Gip, I picked up a bottle of Tenax ever since I was shunned by the rest of the modeling community for using tube glue. Haven’t had a chance to use it yet due to my new baby girl (actually I haven’t had the chance to do ANYTHING lately) but I hope to soon. And by soon I mean by 2012. So will this keep me from being persecuted now?

nwilliams is right. the b-36 at wright-pat has flat black. I even have a pic with my dad next to it. that was a great trip last summer! my congrats too! and I use tube glue also!
Just to add a bit of confusion I have a colour photo of a Fetherweight 111 B36J with an olive drab pannel.

Talking about a B-36… was this model ever made in 1/48? i have been trying to get one and would be nice to get it in 1/48 but all i have found so far is in 1/72 [:(] any word??

Okay, the one at the AF museum is flat black - but was it restored and repainted? What about operational planes in the day?

I’m an Air Force Brat and, I remember the B-36 wing at Travis AFB in the '50s.
The anti-glare panels were flat black. I got to crawl through the last B-36 at Travis
before it flew off to the boneyard. I also remember the natural metal B-52s that replaced them.

actually photos do lie. The light plays its role. My Stuka RLM65 underbelly gives the impression of pale blue to natural gray and all the ranges in between.
If you watch footage from ww2 in color you can understand how the colors get distorted. For example last week I saw a documentary with yellow mustangs!!!
Yellow mustangs? I know OD can get brownish but that was on the yellow side…OD gave a bluish hue to in B-24 in Aleutians, unless they were navy blue indeed…lol

Mandrake a B-36 in 1/48 scale would have a wingspan of almost 58 inches. That would barely fit in my shop HAHA

Don’t worry about a 1/72 scale B-36! I’m about half done with the one made by Revell-Germany, and it’s been more than a handful! Anyway, I’m happy with it. Even in 1/72 I feel it acuratly (Ie kant spell) conveys the emmense size of the actual aircraft. A 1/48 scale B-36 would be crazy!
I was stationed at Travis AFB in the 1950’s and all B-36 and RB-36’s had a flat black anti-glare panel.
