B-17F nose glass

Ok, so I got some decals for a B-17F in 1:48, then I did the nessasary evil and tracked down the kit on ebay, my only thought now it the version I want to build had a single 50cal. in the nose, I’m trying to think how I could make myself a new nose without the twin 50 hole of the revell kit, is it hard to do? Does anybody make a vacuform replacement for a B-17F glass nose?

Toomanyslurpees, I believe there is a conversion vacuform. I suggest talk to Rick at Uncle Bills Hobby here in Calgary, he should know best and might have access to one.

shucks, should have done that, I was just in there the other day

Toomanyslurpees, I just did a search on squadron and all I found were 1:72 B-17f canopies. Unfortunately you may be s.o.l. I guess what I remembered was the squadron 1:72 canopy.

Ask anyway as there may be something out of production that is not listed in current catalogs.

Would it work to use a bit of stretched clear sprue to “plug” the existing holes and simply drill a new one in the correct location? I don’t have a lot of experience in modding clear parts, so I may be way out in left field here, but it seems as though it should work, absent a replacement nose…

Squadron makes vacuform for the G model, the nose glass is the same for most F and G B-17s.

Here is a link: http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=SQ9552

actually, the nose glass on the “G” was much shorter than that on the “F”. pretty much your only option that I know of is to fill the holes in the kit part, cut a new opening, and then vacuform your own part.

Could you try using Future to fill in the holes

then drill out the one you need?

Thanks for the comments, I think I might have to learn a thing or two about vacuforming, anybody know any good links, it would actually be great to learn for some other projects aswell

Actually FSM had a really good article on vacuforming and making your own vacuform machine! I liked the article so much I made my own according to the article but alas, I have not used it yet. I think it was from the spring of 2006, if you look on the archived articles you should be able to find it.

will do, thanks

The early G models and the F models with the chin turret had the regular F nose plexi. The later G’s had the shorter plexi so the guns could elevate farther. The plexi was interchangeable between all B through G models according to the book by Frederick Johanson.
