I am not positive, but I think there were several birds with that name. I am not sure what to do with the nose art. If you can’t find a photo, do you mke it up or do you leave it off? Opinions are very welcome.
Thanks,
ted

Hmmm… Was there nose art, or was it just lettering on the side of the aircraft? If you really can’t find a picture of the original art, maybe you could just add “Flak Happy” in a nice font on the nose.
Hi ya tediam …
We all owe men like your late grandfather a lot … good luck with your research and with your B-17 build … keep us posted please … [swg]
Hi and welcome Tediam!
Even though I can offer no assistance with your B-17 search, I’d like to state that I am very proud to be part of a group of modellers who pitch in and share information like these fine gentlemen have for your grandfather’s B-17. I look forward to seeing a future B-17 group build. Heck, I might have to join in too!
Regards, Dan
Boybuddho, I agree. I would have never been able to find out what I did without the help of guys on here and a elsewhere on the web. This is a great site.
Ted
If you want to populate your B-17…Legend Productions makes a fine crew set in 1/72 scale. 10 figures and very well detailed.
That’s a great idea for a tribute.
welcome to the forums, Chapman!
Hmmm… a 10-man B-17 crew, all in 1/72nd, huh?? That’s GREAT! Is this still in production? How much and where can I buy this?? [:D]
Oh, and this thread has been featured in the FSM newsletter! just FYI. [:p]
Ted,
Here’s some information on the B-17 you’re researching.It’s not a
photo but maybe it will help. Flak Happy of 416 th BS 99th BG was a
B-17G-35 s/n 42-32023 built by Boeing in Seattle, Wa.
According to the reference there is no known photo of this aircraft.
I’ve seen photo’s of other aircraft noseart which supposedly didn’t exist
so don’t give up.You were right there were eight B-17’s named Flak
Happy including your grandfathers.
Harry
Harry,
Thanks, great info. I did have the serial number, very cool to have that on the model. I will keep looking. I do have a photo of this airplane, it just doesn’t have the nose so that I can see the “Flak Happy”. It’s the standard pic of the crew in front of the plane. Also, very cool.
Thanks,
Ted
i seem to recall seeing revell AG’s 1/48 b-24D kit with box art depicting the aircraft with the nose art “Flak Happy” featuring a scantily clad women with clouds of aa fire exploding around her, i’l have to look into that one…but there’s my [2c] on this topic
Man it would be really cool if it turned out that his plane had a pinup nose art. What would you guys put on the nose if it turns out I can’t find the real thing. Does one embellish or not?
Ted
Ted;
The Legends B-17 crew in 1/72 scale is still in production. You can order at www.squadron.com. It lists for $20.96 - stock number LF7202. That would look excellent in your model.
Good luck!
Chris
You might want to check this out. It seems there is a 99th BG Historical Society. http://www.bobpenoyer.com/references.htm
Here is a message board about the 99th BG as well. http://www.armyairforces.com/forums/gforum.cgi?forum=80
B17 GB im in, let me know also, so i can dust off the old monogram.
Sorry to stray from the subject a bit.
Have Superscale ever created a decalset for Memphis Belle in 1/48 ???
What number and can it still be bought ??
Claes
Good luck, Ted! My Dad was a Belly Gunner on B-17’s in the Pacific until they switched over to B-24’s. If I run across anything in my research for my Dad’s bird that you might use I’ll look U up!
ted how is your fort coming? hopefully very well.
