B-17 Did you know?

Recently while I was at a restoration museum I saw a B-17 in the process of being restored. The interesting fact was that after the War a company cut the nose turrent off and replaced with a turbo prop. Thats right a 5 engine B-17. Unfortunately, they were restoring this B-17 back to it’s original specs. I have a picture of a picture of it flying if anyone is interested. I would post it but I can’t figure out how.

Hi jonathan seen it and it looked cool ,that engine was HUGE. did you know that there were several 5 engined lancs some with jets and some with turboprops too . there was one lanc B2 with 6 engines one in the nose (python turboprop) and one in the tail (possably a viper)jet engine. There was even a B17 with 4 Rolls Royce dart turboprops flying in Bolivia hauling freight so i am told …gregers

Oh, yeah… One of the ugliest yet at the same time most interesting B-17 mods I’ve ever seen.

For some info on this mod:

Here’s what one of these things looked like:

And this was perhaps the strangest mod of a B-17! [;)]

Fade to Black…

Oh dear, the Rutan (Snr) B-17 has resurfaced, now the MIB will have to come around to wipe your hard drive and your memory! It’s too late for me, save yourself!

Learn something new. First time I’ve seen that. I did not know that a B-17 was converted to this type of test bed of some sort.
Though somehow I knew of the Lancaster with the jets and other mods…Goes to show why we read these forums to help in ourresearch.[;)]

Fly Navy!

Not about the turbo in the nose I didnt.
But could anyone tell me if there is a converson kit to make an X(or Y)B38?

Those are some pretty wild pictures. I had only seen the five engine version. I am not ready to try and convert something like that but someday I may see what kind of monstrosity I can put together.

Trivia Quiz for those of you who are familiar with the 5-engined Forts. One of them (there were two) was an aircraft that actually saw combat in WWII. What was the name of the aircraft, and what unit did it serve with?
