Austin Class LPD

Does anybody know of a manufacturer who sells a 1/350 or 1/700 Austin class LPD? Just visited one here in New York City for fleet week, about two weeks ago. USS SHREVEPORT LPD 12 . Havent been on one of those since i was in the Marines in the late 80’s. I would love to build one. [8D]

No one that I know of, sorry.

Jeff

i wouldn’t mind finding one of those myself. i served from early 87 to mid 91 onboard u.s.s. juneau, LPD-10

JAG Collective has a 1/700 resin USS Austin that is sometimes listed as an LST, however, I do believe this is the ship you are looking for.

However, the kit represents the class in the late 1960s and not what you saw in NYC. That configuration will require a lot of work. However, if you want the general lines, the kit is well worth the price and a good first resin ship kit.

SB - if you get it let me know. I have a some flight deck and exterior shots of the Austin from the mid 80’s when I was on her, I’d be happy to email or post them here to ya if they’d help. I’d also be interested in how it builds up as I have been contemplating doing one too… Now if they would just come out with a USS Guam I would be even happier!

well, i’d much rather work on a 1/350 scale ship, but i may take my chances with the 1/700. though it appears that it would require some modifications, so i may need your pictures if i get my hands on one. i’ll keep you posted. Thanks[:)]

Steve - will do, I’ll try to scan some of them later of some of the more prominent features and post them…

Here’s a little review on the kit by JAG, looks simple enough for me to try it even! Big note is if you are wanting to do the Austin herself, you’ll have to leave off the aicraft hanger as the Austin didn’t have one. The rest of them did have it though. I think I saw that in the review but wasn’t sure.

Good luck!

Johnathan I noticed you were on a gator too… was the Juneau Phibron 3 or 6?

I found this website from the US Navy on the class.

My interest has been piqued because whilst at a Green Bay hotel a few weeks ago there was a commissioning party in one of the large conference rooms for LPD 20 – the USS Green Bay. Navy and Marine brass were everywhere.

I am getting ready to order one for me from this company. http://www.motionmodels.com/ships/amphib.html
