I would like to mask my clear canopy and attach it temporarily for airbrushing. FSM readers have recommended rubber cement for this but I’m afraid the vapors will damage the clear glass. Elmer’s rubber cement which I would probably use has a strong odor…I suspect danger to my beautiful clear parts…
I’m hesitating b/c it’s the first time I’m trying this. In the past I would mask the cockpit cavity and airbrush with the canopy off.
Rubber cement is a bad idea. I’ve tried it before, a lot, for weathered boards on building models. It’s a mess. It takes a while to cure, and it leaves all kinds of Bu**ers. Regular white glue, or Krystal Klear is MUCH better.
Concur with Bondo. I can’t see any advantage that rubber glue would have over white glue, which doesn’t damage the plastic, sets hard overnight, cleans up with water, and is easy to remove.
If you’re going to be removing the canopy anyway, it can do no harm to mask it on the interior, just in case any paint does get in, and cause overspray.
Masking parts with white glue won’t do them permanent harm. I know, because I’ve done it mysefl by accident, picking up the tube of white glue when I should have been using Copydex latex glue, which is an excellent masking material (works just like Maskol, but with none of the issues Maskol has).
It’s just that the stuff can be a b*gger to remove…
I vaguely remember a recipe for homemade liquid mask that involved white glue, a little liquid dishwashing soap and some food coloring to make the dried mask visible. It worked pretty well as I recall, especially for paint chips on camo; as in silver paint, then mask, and then the camo paint. Remove the mask and instant paint chips! Does anyone else remember this?
Best stuff I’ve ever used. Similar to Klear. It’s flexible, dries clear, and doesn’t shrink, and can be removed without damage. I use it to affix canopies I’m leaving closed, and use small amounts to temporarily affix clear parts. Don’t use it to completely mask a canopy though. I use MicroMask for that.
I think he is wanting to put the canopy on temporarily. Then after painting remove it and show it open. I do this alot now. I use Woodland Scenics Scenic Accent Glue. Its kinda like a cross between rubber cement and white glue. Just a light layer does it. Dries clear, doesnt bother clear canopy. Works good for doors and stuff too.
