I Hope everyone is doing well, and getting time at the workbench. I bought this kit around the same time as the 1/12th scale Camaro. This is my first Atlantis kit, and I have to tell you, that I was pleasantly surprised when I opened up the box. The parts did have some flashing to remove, but that’s just about with any kit. There is an incorrect part in this kit that you need a replacement for. On the instructions, this part is B-2. It is the shroud that goes around the driver. I contacted Atlantis about a replacement, and was shipped one free of charge. I was surprised how fast I got it.
I chose to strip all of the chrome parts. About 15 minutes in Super Clean, and the parts were clean. I removed the parts and cleaned them with water prior to priming. This was my first attempt at applying Alclad II chrome. I went on YouTube to get a good handle on how to apply it. It’s didn’t turn out too bad.
I used Tamiya fine primer as a base. After that, I applied several thin coats of gloss, black paint. Once the paint was completely dry, I applied the Alclad chrome (ALC 107). After a few hours, I coated all the parts with clear gloss (several thin coats) I just started using Alclad paints about 3 years ago. These paints are amazing. I used several different colors on the engine components.
The extra components that Atlantis included in this kit to dress up the engine, are very nice. (spark, plug wiring, blower belt, and tubing for fuel lines and such.) I wanted to go a step further to super detail this engine.. Ted’s modeling marketplace offers a wide variety of components to make this happen. (braided fuel lines, couplings, and throttle linkages ,just to name a few).
If you want a really cool addition to your car collection, this would definitely be an eye popper! I was able to get my hands on some 1/16th scale funny car drivers from Aurora. I purchased them from eBay. The box was wrapped in the original cellophane. You will have a great time putting this one together.
I ended up putting around three thin coats of Tamiya clear gloss on the body. After it was cured, I used Novus number 2 to polish the clearcoat
Looking fantastic! I too am a fan of alclad paints. For super shiny try their airframe aluminum ALC119.

The detail is amazing. Great work. Fun to watch your build progress.
Thanks Peter. Looking forward to detailing the engine.
Holy cow, that’s shiny. What color and sheen did you use for a base color? I definitely don’t have the chrome process down yet. Your results are amazing. Thanks for posting this. I have to give this a try
I’ve been using Tamiya gloss black.
This was my first time detailing an engine. Ted’s Modeling Marketplace carries a wide range of modeling supplies and aftermarket parts. When I placed the order, I got enough for two models. The braided hoses are crazy!!!. The car itself is finished. I’m building a very small wooden base for the diorama. Sandpaper is glued on top to simulate asphalt.
Great looking build. How did you secure the fittings to the braided hose? I tried CA once and the braid wicked it away.
The hoses I purchased, have a soft rubber interior inside the metal braiding. This stuff cuts very easily. I used Loc Tite super glue. I slid the fitting to the end of the hose, then applied glue end.
That turned out really nice!
