Army Painter Matt varnish issues

I’m getting some weird issues when I spray Army Painter matte clear coat after weathering; it’s got like a fuzzy texture if you can see from the attached photo. It almost looks like it’s been collecting dust for a week even though the surface was clean before spraying. Has anyone encountered anything like this?

Is it a lacquer based varnish?

There could be a few explanations for this. It might have reacted with the paint brand you used, it could have been sprayed too close or too far from the model. There might be something wrong with the nozzle or the paint itself might have gone bad. Where you sprayed it might have been too cold, too hot or humid etc.
Using an aerosol you have very little control of the flow- if you can use an airbrush then that is the better option. If not I’d suggest setting up a few tests with the same paint on the plane. Unfortunately there is little you might be able to do to sort it out short of very careful, very light sanding with high grit paper (like 3000 grit or higher) to smooth it out. But there is a great risk of disturbing the paint and decals with that.

I agree with Karl on all points – though looking closely on the image, I think it’s most likely that the spray was a little dry. That is, it tended to be dried up a bit before hitting the model. I’ve often had that happen when airbrushing a flat coat and being too timid to lay it down wet. I also see what kind of look like little clumps on the model, which might come from the nozzle of the spray can being dirty or the contents of the can not being mixed well enough. Make sure you shake that can REALLY WELL and consider setting it in a pan of warm water for a while before spraying.

One thing that has sometimes rescued a “frosty” model for me is to spray it with a wet coat of GLOSS varnish to sort of envelop the frosty matte finish. Then hit it again with a matte coat. It could be worth a try, and definitely lower-risk than sanding.

So I gave it another try, this time I measured the distance from the model instead of just eyeballing it and it turned out a lot better (I was way too far last time :face_savoring_food:):

Turns out things work much better when I read the instructions and actually follow them, who knew?
