Armature wire for detailing

Hey, guys. I really need help for this one. I read the recently published article on detailing Tamiya’s F4U-1D Corsair by Scott Murphy. Scott used .002 armature wire for the radio wire. He also used .004 wire and .010 wire for different things. Where can you get .002, .004, and .010 wire? I’ve been searching everywhere, including the net. So far, I’m striking out. PLEASE HELP!!! If you have any info, please e-mail me. henryfamily1@netzero.net Or, if anybody knows Scott, please have him give me a quick e-mail. Thanks for the help. Bob

I picked up a pack of armature wire at Radio shack. I say pack as it came with 3 reels of 3 differant sizes. I’m at work and cant recall the exact sizes right now. I will say all 3 sizes have been handy.

Do you know an electrician (as in TV, radio)? My dad has a box full of transformers and other items that seem to have Miles of windings of copper, steel and other. Very thin wire.

Search on “magnet wire” instead. Problem is you probably need only a few feet and it is generally sold by the pound which means thousands of feet at your sizes. They are sized by AWG #'s (larger number is smaller diameter). AWG 30 = 0.01", AWG 38 = 0.004", AWG 44 = 0.002". The RS set of 3 includes AWG 30 as its smallest size. As suggested your best bet is scrounging coils or transformers from a broken toy or radio. The armature wires in a small toy motor can be unwound and will be in the range you’re after. Also try the wires in any scrap electronic (vs. electrical) gadget. If you remove the insulation, most are stranded wires where each strand will be around AWG 38.
