Arcrylic wash over Alclad question

I painted the read of my su-27 with Alclad jet exhaust, then after 30 mins, I gave it a black wash with Tamiya flat black thinned with Tamiya Acrylic thinner. When I tried to remove the wash excess with a Q-tip dipped into Tamiya Acrylic thinner, it removed the Alclad paint :frowning: I don’t know what’s going on , I thought that Aclad is laquer based and could not be removed by Acrylic thinner, am I wrong here ? please help …

thanks

Egad! another caught by the dreaded paint technology trap! (Are you watching, Mark and Matt? [:-,])

Alclad (II, I presume) is, indeed, a lacquer. Many lacquers contain one or more components soluble in alcohol, and lacquers, unlike coatings that harden by curing, are readily redissolved by their solvents. Tamiya thinner almost certainly contains one or more alcohols, and possibly a surfactant, that will redissolve Alclad.

Don’t feel dumb—it’s an easy mistake for even an expert to make!

To make a Tamiya acrylic wash that is safe over Alclad, use water with a drop of detergent intstead of Tamiya thinner. For a wash, you won’t notice a difference.

Or try a pastel wash. Finely gorund chalk pastels, water an dish soap.

Many thanks for your advises. I’ll try with water. This would save me a bunch of $$$.
