Applying washes

Hi. I am doing a brown wash on an engine but I don’t like the result as when dried it leaves marks on the spray. I am using tamiya acrylic thinned with 40%white spirit and 60% water. Can anyone help me out for washes?

Tamiya acrylics are usually incompatible with water, but you can use a sludge wash with it:

1/5 dishwashing liquid
3/5 water
1/5 Tamiya acrylic

Add more paint as needed.

Thanks albert.I will try it

Get yourself some artisits water color paint.( Black or burnt sienna or whatever color you prefer)and Dilute with water and a few drops of dish washing liquid.

thanks guys. It’s much better now.

You can also try tempera paints. There was an article in FSM sometime over the past year or so about it, and the one time I’ve tried it the results were pretty good. Plus, unlike the Tamiya, you can buy a quart of paint for about $2, so you aren’t ever going to run out.

The nice thing about using the tempera paints is that if you don’t like the results you can completely remove them with water and start over with out damaging your base color. It’s almost a fool proof method.

Andrew: did you put a seal coat (such as Future) on the engine before the wash? That should prevent any undue mixing of the finish color and the wash.

not much help but u might find away
