Need some help…have been having trouble the last few go arounds with the outcome of the application of the decals on my model helos. Just finished the CH-46E by Academy. Turned out okay, for my skill level, hovever, the decals when dried looked, I don’t know how to describe it…I guess they looked like they lifted off the surface. The decals do not look like the “melted” into the surface. You can see the outline and shine…looks bad. I tried decal set with same results. What am I doing wrong?
Mcal,
Firstly, WELCOME!!!
Now, did you hit the model with a gloss clear coat before applying the decals? That will give the model a nice smooth surface for the decals to settle down onto. After that, apply with setting solution, and finally cover with clear dull coat.
Hope that helps!
You are describing “silvering.” It occurs when the decals are applied over a flat, irregular surface. What you are seeing is light reflecting off tiny air pockets under the decals. The key is to apply a gloss coat to the area where the decals will go. This gives the decals a smooth surface to adhere to. Continue using either Microsol, Solvaset, or some other setting solution when you apply them, especially over rivet detail or other surface protrutions. Lastly, put a couple of coats of dullcoat or gloss (depending on the finish you want) after the decals have dried to seal and blend them into the rest of the paint job. This should solve your decal problems.
Hope that helps.
I have another quick question on the subject…
Do you guys apply future just to the area immediately under the decal? Or will that give it a splotchy look after the cleat flat is applied? Just wondering if you need to future the whole model before putting on the decals, or just spots where the decals go.
I use Testor’s Glosscoat, not Future, and will usually just put it in the place where the decals go. I have no issues with it blending in with a couple coats of Testor’s Dullcoat over top. The only time I gloss the entire model is when there are lots of decals and it is impractical to spot gloss it. I am assuming that the Future would work in the same manner.
Thanks guys for the help…I just finished a AH-1T+ Cobra and purchased the TwoBobs decal set for it and will apply techniques advised…I’ll put some pics up asap to show results.
