Guys: I just saw Tamiya’s SU-100 Tank Destroyer on Luckymodel …no biggie…a re-release, big woop…I thought. Then I did a double take[8-)] and saw it was a 1/25th scale version! I’m a 1;35 guy and think that 1:16 is TOO big but that 1:25 seems interesting.
Anybody buy the kit yet? Considering it? Thoughts? Hear anything about it? Pros/Cons?..
I barely have room to display in 1/35. If anything, I’d be more likely to go smaller - that growing line of 1/48 armor kits is tempting…
I built the Korean knock-offs of the SU100 and T34 a few years ago, they’re not much for accuracy, but I like the size. I started a re-do of the T34 last year and promptly lost interest after getting the turret shape closer to the real thing.
I do agree that while they’re large, and mass-consumers of display space, it’s a very nice scale to work in. Probably due to my age, I find 1/48 too small for comfort. Heck, I can’t even see my finished work unless I have some kind of reading glasses on, so you can imagine the goggles I wear to work…

No interest for me in the larger scales. I’ve done 1/16 and 1/25 before and found that 1/35 is the right balance both in terms of detail in the molding and display space for the finished item. [;)]
Nope sorry Steve 1/35 and 1/72 are the only two scales I’ll model. If I was asked to build it for someone else then yes I probably would.
Guys: Based on your replies, it looks like Tamiya will practically have to give the kit away to find takers. Display space is at a premium for me too but I’d like to see it first hand before I say a flat-out no. I’ll keep ya’ posted!

I’ve seen a few reviews in magazines and she looks like a great build.
Apart from this one I’ll be sticking with 1/35 and the occasional 1/48.

Steve - Not much Od in 1/25 or 1/16. Like Bill stated, I think 1/35 has a good balance of details without taking up the whole house to display…besides…WAY too much 1/35 on the shelf waiting for me. I will be sticking with 1/35.
Bigger is not always better…balance is more important!

I have eyeballed their large Centurion, but cost and space are a limiting factor.
I think I’d give a 1/25 M5 Stuart a shot, but most tanks would be too much of a handful for me in that scale. I did notice the new 1/24 Panzer 2 though and admit it kind of got my attention.
Personally I think softskins would offer the most in 1/25 as they would offer some crossover with the auto builders. A Sherman tank is pretty much a Sherman tank regardless of the scale but there are all kinds of non-military uses for a surplus army truck, brush fire truck, tractor pull, extreme terrain racer, farm truck etc.
For armor I agree 1/35 is a nice size, for crossovers I’d actually prefer to see some autos in 1/35, a Toyota pickup or Landcruiser would be very handy for modern military dioramas.
Pass. I think 1/35 is a nice size to play with. The long-barreled cats can take up a lot of room all by themselves.
I am for BIGGER. As I age I find that the bigger, it is, the better. My only issue is price, and lack of interesting subjects. I think instead of going to 1/48th they should have gone up to 1/25th
Guys: More interesting thoughts, thanks. I especialy like the idea of having some of the smaller variant tanks offered in 1:25. Like the forementioned Stuart. The M3 Lee and PzII would be nice at a bit bigger scale too. I like the shear size juxtposition of a Tiger I next to a PzII in the same scale but the additional detail opportunities of those little guys at 1:25 would be cool!

If I went bigger than 1/35,it would have to me something huge,motorized and RC.Definately not out of the question.
I wish we had more 1/24 or 1/25 armor. Tamiya re-released the 1/25 Tiger I with full interior which looks to be decent. I built the Bandai 1/24 King Tiger and Jagdpanther many years ago and enjoyed the builds. The interiors were pretty good and can be an impressive display.

I saw that, unfortunately it has no interior so it would be a MAJOR scratch build project. It would be nice if an engine and interior set were made available to really pimp it up!
Nope. I too, feel that 1/35 is a nice balance of size and detail. I’ve got waaay too much unbuilt 1/35 plus, I’m still trying to figure out where to put my 1/32 AC
