Hi, everyone.
I am looking to get an M274 mule on ebay. There is one by Glencoe in 1/15. Does anyone have any experience with this kit or company? I ask because the kit has only 44 pieces, as opposed to over 80 in Dragon’s 1/35 kit. Would this mean less detail, or just more, well… efficient molding (ie,one piece wheels rather than say, two wheel halves and a tire)? Any help is appreciated, I’ve bought very few kits and thus have little experience with different brands. (By the way, the auction ends in two days.)
Thanks,
-----Kevin
Glencoe is early '70s technology. Their molds are soft and detail is simplified. They are very toy-like. Usually, less pieces means poor detail as much of the detail is molded on. I would stay away from them.
The Dragon Mule is very nice. It is full of detail and goes together pretty well too. It is the one I recommend.
I bought 4 of the Glencoe mules from Balzano’s. I thought they would be a good entry point into modelling for my two boys over the Xmas break. At 10 bucks apiece, I dont care if they screw them up. I bought the Glencoe Walker Bulldog for $30, it was laughable quality compared to the big boys, but, for 1/15 scale, ridiculously cheap. Still trying to make a worthwhile New Zealand version, thanks to the excellent decal sheet. With Glencoe, you get what you pay for, just dont expect too much. Its not like I can afford 1/16 Tamiya/Trumpeter armour.
Nick Argento, who owns Glencoe, buys old molds of obscure models and repackages them. They are far from state of the art but they are often the only game in town for the subjects/scale/
Well, thanks. I’ll probably go for the Dragon kit. Too bad though, I kind of wanted to build the “big” version. But, I’d rather have good detail and a “reputable” company. Wirraway, have you opened any of yours yet? Would you mind, if you think of it, maybe taking a few pics or something when you open them? I may not get one until spring semester. (for college group build) Thanks!

UGH. I wouldn’t touch 'em with a ten foot tweezer!
They’re simply dreadful in my opinion!
I agree. I have two Glencoe biplanes in my stash. There isn’t much at all to like about them.

As you can see, not much there. But a mule is a fairly simple piece of equipment in the first place. I’m sure my boys and I will get some fun out of them.
