Anyone know anything about Allied and Axis fighter radio protocols? How secure were their radios?

I’m working on a short fiction piece for my next project, which involves an American and German pilot who tangle but find they have more in common when they thought after both crash near each other.

Anyway, I need to know what radio security was like for fighter pilots on both sides. Would it ever be possible for each to talk to the other while in the air? How hard would it be for one to break into the other’s frequency? If anyone could elaborate on this I’d be most appreciative. Thanks!

from what I recall, our fighters had preset buttons for radio frequencies. they could not dial up whatever freq they wanted, they could only switch between the buttons. P-51s, for example, used the BC 602-3 radio control box…it had 4 channel buttons that the pilot could choose from.
