I would like to know if anyone is interested in the Star Trek Federation Spacedock? The one that looks like a big mushroom floating in space. If so, would you prefer in resin or vacuum formed? It would be a larger model, 18 inches to 2 feet or more.
How much would you be willing to pay for one?
Federation Models used to offer it but they stopped some time ago. I’ve been looking for one but have not had any success. I have been discussing it but don’t know if I am the only one interested. If there is enough interested, someone might produce it again.
If it’s only about a foot or so high, then resin. Bigger than that it’ll get too heavy. I hate vacs, but a 24" spacedock would be good even if it was vac. Or maybe make the big mushroom head in vac and the rest in resin.
As for price, I hate paying over $100 for any model. I might venture up to $150 for a good big spacedock.
I agree with John that resin would be too heavy for the size you’re suggesting. I’ve only built one vac kit to date, but I wouldn’t baulk at buying one if the main components were vacuformed. Of course, the detail would have to be resin or white metal. Price would be the stumbling block. If it could be kept at or below the $100 range I would be interested.
Interesting idea!! A smaller version (similar in size like the FM one) would be best in resin. Anything over 12" might be best in vac but of course, cost would be of some consideration as well. A 24" Spacedock would probably work best in vac and still keep the cost reasonable.
I’ve worked with several vac kits and found that as long as you’re attentive to preparing the parts - and that the vac kit itself isn’t poorly molded - then building a vac kit is quite satisfying! Plus, it’s nice to have something that can’t be found “on the shelf” as easily as some subjects.
I’d like to recommend that you post this survey over at the Starship Modeler forum as well. I guarentee you’ll get some good info there. That’s not to say that this forum doesn’t give good info. It’s just that Starship Modeler’s web forum focuses on the very sort of thing this thread is all about.
BTW, I agree with the others. I think it’s a great idea but anything larger than 12 inches should be vacu-formed. A resin model tht size would be too heavy (even if it’s hollow-cast I think) not to mention very expensive.
I’d consider buying an 18" multimedia kit (main hull vacform, details and greeblies resin or whitemetal/PE) but only if it’s under $100. I actually think that might be feasible too.
Count me in; not sure about the scale though. The StarCraft models at federationmodels.com are 1/1400, and at approx. 10" long, would make the spacedock too huge for any shelf in my house.
