I’ve been trying to inventory my stash and I ran across this monster-sized 1/48 scale airplane. It comes in a big box billed as A.V. Roe Canada’s penultimate interceptor of Canada’s skies. I bought it back in June 2000, literally 13 years ago.
I wonder if it’s worth keeping or should be eBay fodder.
I build one years ago. It is the only injected kit of it in 1/48. Fit is ok, details are lacking. The kit is a cross between versions.
Here’s what I did with the Mark 4 version of this kit but it’s the same build sequence as the Mark 5. The Mark 5 has the extended wingtips and extended horizontal stab,
It’s a bizarre build sequence. The fuselage comes in 4 parts; front upper and lower halves and rear left and right halves. Panel lines are trenches. As stated detail is minimal. Some cockpit scratch building will make it look a bit better. It’s no longer being produced and is becoming quite rare. I don’t think it will command a stupid outrageous price on ebay…but I could be wrong.
I’m finding Hobby Craft in general lack detail, especially in the cockpit amongst other areas.
I’m working on their CF-18 and Arrow right now and both are a pilot seated on a slab of styrene.
Rob, history-wise the Canuck was one of the few aircraft to be able to fly in those early years of the Cold war as an all-weather interceptor. It is the only game in town for the CF-100 in 1/48 scale. I have the their 1/72 scale version. If you decide to keep it and build it, you could probably use the cockpit from a F105 dual seater as few would know the difference.
How could you use a the cockpit from an F-105 in a CF-100?? They share nothing in common. Not even the ejection seats.
I started one some time ago but it’s currently on the shelf of doom. As for the cockpit, what the kit supplies is mostly fantasy. If you use the pilots little will be seen in the end anyway.
If you are interested in detailing one there is only one reference I have found and that’s “CF 100 All Weather Fighter” by Ron D. Page. It’s out of print but can be found if you check some of the online used book sellers.
There is also this book (also out of print), which contains drawings and photos of the seats, landing gear, radar, and gun bay.
