I’ve built JU88s from 1/144th thru the 1/48th Hobbycraft kit, including the Lindberg 1/6x kit, but never built the old AMT 1/48th JU88 kit from the 70’s.
Realize that all known 1/48th JU88 kits have been surpassed by the DML 1/48th JU88 kits, but has anyone built the old AMT kit - and how does it compare to say the Hobbycraft 1/48th JU88 kit?
Wow, does that bring back memories. Yes I built one back around 1976 or so. I remember it went together real easy and the fit was good. The parts were all rather thick and the interior detail was sparse but held up well with a 10 year old (Me) playing with it . I could be wrong, but when I built the Hobbycraft kit a few years ago, my impression was that it was the same kit.
Thanks for the reply John! Sounds like if it was similar to the old Hobbycraft 1/48th JU88, then it was at least “as good”. Put that in quotes because until the DML-released 1/48th JU88 series came out, the dismal Hobbycraft was all we had after AMT stopped production.
I am currently building one. After being away from the hobby for a considerable time I needed a guinea pig for for all the new materials and techniques that have come along since my departure from the hobby. The kit box had long since disintegrated and I had bagged it in a zip lock. The fuselage is together and the wings are on and it is currently being used to test filling techniques and materials. The instructions are a joke, they not only don’t mention what version it is but have no history either. I used one wing to test my scribing skills and tools and plan to try several types of finishes. I got a good chuckle out of the diamond tread pattern on the flight deck. Over all the shape isn’t all that bad but the supercharger housings under the engines seems a bit overdone. Assuming it survives my tortures I may make a crash scene diorama with it if I can make the broken off props look like splintered wood. I plan to dirty up the glazings enough to hide the lack of internal detail. I have never seen the Hobbycraft kit and if it’s the same kit, I glad I didn’t !
