So awhile back i started doing monovision. About 13 years ago i had laser vision correction and all was good until about 2 years ago and the eyes started to change again. I decided to try mono vision, using 1 contact for distance leaving the other eye alone for reading, close up. During modelling id use readers to help out. Has worked pretty good until now. After taking a 2 month summer break, i picked up a few days ago and my depth preception is worse than usual - harder to work with those small pieces… Was a little bit of an issue previously with the readers but seems to be more now.
Anyone else doing monovision? Looking for tips.
Doc did recommend 1.75 readers and mine are only 1’s. Maybe ill try 1.75’s???
I’m not sure I would call it “monovision”, and it sure as shiite isnt intentional, but April of 2018 I had a partial retinal detachment. I had the surgury to fix it, life was good…until just after Christmas 2018. The same issue that caused my retinal detachment (basically, super-nearsightedness, which has my eye stretched out, coupled with “thicker than normal” eye jelly) caused a blood vessel to develop a small tear, causing my vision to fog in my left eye. Went back to the surgeon, basically he said it will more than likely clear up on its own. a few weeks go by, and my vision gets better.
A few weeks later, something similar occurs, so I go back to Wills Eye. My doctor explains to me that basically, this will probbly keep occuring, and to permanently fix it, I need another surgery, where they go in, remove my super thick eye juice, and I guess, give me some artificial eye juice…well, I am not in the fincancial position for another 1700 dollar surgery, so, for now, I am stuck with about 60 percent vision in my left eye. it gets to be a pain in the asp sometimes, but I am coping…
I do monovision with my contacts and have for years. Unless I’m really close I don’t have much trouble, but I do use magnifiers for modeling. Keep several powers handy. Definitely get the 1.75s.
I was lucky in a way- in my early twenties I became near sighted in one eye and far sighted in the other. I bought a pair of glasses, but only used them to pass driver’s license tests. In ordinary every day life I was fine without glasses, though depth perception was not real good. Eventually things gradually changed to where I needed reading glasses, but off-the-shelf ones did not work because each eye needed quite different correction.
Then, needed cataract surgery. Elected to go with option to have both eyes set up for distance. That meant I did have to have reading glasses, but could use off-the-shelf, cheap ones. Also, this meant I could buy dollar store glasses with more correction than needed for reading, to see closer at work bench. So I have reading glasses in rec room where I ordinarily read, and two higher correction glasses at my work bench, a medium close and a super-close pair (both dollar store glasses).
yep, gonna get some drug store ones today. I have used a head set for real close up stuff but as mentioned the 1’s no longer work that well. Also, mentioned above, with mono vision my depth of field is off but that is to be expected from using correction in one eye only.
Did an old test at my insistance when I had to re-new the License to fly. Teh test? Well now it’s electronic ,but it’s the depth of field and distance test that was required years ago. To my surprise, even with mild Cataracts ! I passed!
Having that piece of paper ( papers ) etc. Means a lot even if I can’t afford even an hour in the air now. Oh well, if I ever find myself inside the passenger area of a plane and the Flight Attendant comes to me and asks can you fly this plane? LOL!LOL! I will be able to bring us home! Dream On !!!
Greg hit it on the head. Just try different power over the counter readers. The power that works best for will depends on how close you sit to your work, your presciption, etc. Higher power readers just means you’ll have to hold your work closer. You may or may not like that.
I keep two pair of cheap cheaters. I use 1-3/4 for most work, and I keep a pair of 2-1/4 handy for very close work. I don’t use the latter all the time, because the edges of field are fuzzy, and I get a little headache after awhile, probably because of the strain of convergance (there is no wedge with cheaters).
