FSM rarely covers sci-fi anymore, so I was wondering-does anyone know of any sci-fi specific mags? I’m more into hardware and ships than figures, so I’m aware of the figure modeler magazines. I’m looking more for spaceship modeling I guess.
AFAIK, the only magazines that regularly cover robots and mecha are the japanese magazines like Hobby Japan, Model Graphix, etc.
As for spaceship designs and building Kits like the Star Trek Kits, I don’t think there is enough interest and models out there to make it worthwhile to issue a specialised mag.
But there might be a few fanzines or so published.
The best one from the US with hardware in it is Modelers Resource. It also has figures but lots of ships and some interesting dioramas. www.modelersresource.com
A fanzine out of England is DRONE. You can check them out here http://www.dronemagftvmc.com/
Kitbuilders used to have a some hardware mixed with the figures. I haven’t seen an issue on the shelves recently but did use to get this one http://www.gremlins.com/kitbuilders/
A very slick mag is AFM (Amazing Figure Modeler). As the name implies, it is more of a figure mag but also have the occasional hardware story. http://www.amazingmodeler.com/
It’s not a magazine, but have you tried www.starshipmodeler.com? It’s a great source of info on hardware and has lots of reference material, kit reviews, etc.
I’m just curious as to what the U.S. readership numbers were for SF&FM magazine.
The older “models” version was my favorite, but it started to focus more and more on special FX there toward the end. I think that and too many issues per year is what killed it, IMO.
Well, I thought it was the BEST SF Modeling mag on the market and as stated in my original post, I miss it a lot.
I was disappointed when it folded. While online sites are great, there’s something about holding a magazine in your hands.
I also agree about some of the effects stuff. I skipped the issues about makeup, figures etc. since I’m a hardware modeler, whether it’s ships, ship interiors, etc.
I was lucky enough to get to Wonderfest in Louisville, Kentucky here in the states in 1998 (where my dropship took a Silver medal) and bought every back issue I could afford.
