The T-38 is coming up on 60 years in service. With the selection of the Boeing/Saab T-7 Red Hawk its service is almost over.
Is there any interest in a Group Build for this iconic aircraft?

I’m in. I have one in the stash - part of my trainer collection.
I wish I had time but I have too many projects going to do anything for the next 6 months. I have a 1/48 Sword kit that someone else needs to own, and the Collect-Aire 1/32 resin kit in the stash. I built the Wolfpack kit and I like it very much. The canopy was a bit fiddley. I also have several of the Fujimi-Testors kits that for a long time was the only option near 1/48, but they are actually 1/50 and very simplified. Kits for Grandkids now.
Very nice T-38! I have the wolfpack in my stash.
If this goes off I’d look for a April2020 start and a March 2021 end.
I’d be in with a Trumpeter 1/48 thunderbird scheme.

Not a whole lot of love for the T-38, Maybe if we open it up to a military trainer GB?
Thoughts?
That would work, I have about 20 military trainers in the stash.

I only have 1 project going on right now, so count me in sirs! Will be my fist group build ever [:D]. I have Academy/Mincraft “old” 1/48 T38-A Talon sitting in me stash. Very nice looking kit, except for no cockpit detail to speak of [;)]. I was planning on going to town on it (full resin interior, metal landing gear, full resin loadout, the works), now it’ll give me the motivation to go through with it [A]. That would make it the second model kit I’ve ever built, the first i’m working on at the moment (not counting the few half finished ones i “tried” to make a few years ago). This is a ton of fun!
See ya’ll in April, Willy [H].
Hello sir! I think mine is one of those… Academy/Minicraft 1/48 T38-A Talon, am i correct? Surface detail is all recessed panel lines/rivets, looks very nice to me. No pit detail to speak of, is it possible to take an 1/48 resin interior set and stick it in there? My modelling bro says it’s better to leave it as is, and paint over the canopy black. Desktop model he calls it. I’m quite new to modelling, so kinda want to learn to do superdetailing with it. Your thoughts?
I didn’t know that Academy ever released that kit, but I checked Scalemates and see that they did. 1/50 is smaller than 1/48 of course, so it would be difficult to get a resin cockpit to fit as they are usually too big to fit in 1/48 without some grinding. I would follow your friend’s advice as the canopy allows a view of everything in the cockpit on the T-38. The main point of a T-38 is its sleek lines and attractive paint schemes. A light blue is also a good color to paint the inside of the canopy.
Superdetailing is not something you can learn on one model, it’s really a collection of skills that you pick up over time. The best things to concentrate on when you are just starting out is getting seam work done well and all the parts of the model aligned right. I find that a lot of filling and sanding is caused by being in too big of a hurry to stick parts together. I spend a lot of time fitting things to find the best way to get tight joints, and I usually find when things don’t seem to fit that a little sanding and carving will produce a much better fit.
To my mind, it is more satisfying to enjoy looking at a nicely finished model than one that has many added details but imperfect seams and paintwork.
That sir, is the best advise ever! [:D[ It tis whet i’m going to do on it [:D]. I guess you can see that i’m in a good mood this evenin [;)]. I think i’ll do exactly what you’ve suggested, thank you sir! Willy [:)]
I’d add another project to the bench for this. Would still be a T-38 even if you expand to trainers. The NASA version I think but i also like the bicentenial.
john, that Collect-Aire is a collector now! Very hard to find, almost impossible.
We are getting close! By my counting we have 5 interested. So far all T-38’s I think.
Some love for the Talon! Hopefully we can get a few more people.
Sickdude, As said getting a cockpit into the old kit might be hard. Maybe a cardstock one of interior photos might work. Or just painting the canopy’s would work also.
If its converted to a trainer GB I’d be in with an old Airfix Fouga Magister
When does this start? Itching to build my T38
Looks like its a go with us mach. Maybe start it March?.. and run it till the end of December?.. It’ll give me plenty of time to finish my enterprise, and order the necessary things for the talon. Great stuff!
Service entry was 17 March 1961.
If we start 17 March 2020 we can end on the 60th aniversery 17 March 2021.
Does that sound good?
Is anyone good at making a badge?
Does anyone want to co-sponsor?
I propose any military trainer, less than 50% complete are welcome.
The aircraft does not need to start life as a trainer, but the build needs to be in
trainer trim if it was not designed as one. Any designed trainer can be in any trim.
I think thats about it I think.
That sounds great mach. I don’t have any experience with photoshopping, so I leave it up to you fellers to work out a badge. I’m new in the world of group building, so i’ll watch/learn the ropes from you fellers. That’s bout it. I’ll start cracking on my talon the 17th, and figure out how to post pics ;).
I went and dug my Talons out of the stash.
Wolfpack and Trumpeter 1/48. I ordered some aftermarket decals. The Caracel set is getting rare if anyone is looking for them.
I’m thinking of this for a badge, I’ll see if I can get “Military Trainer Group Build 2020”
on it.
I’ll get something up over at the GB section soon.
Sounds great Mach. I really like the looks of the badge. Those 2 are on my wish list, much better then my kit. But i’m going to have fun with it, great platform to practice painting and decaling. Cant wait to get rolling…
