Any information on Landscaping / Diorama material?

Hello, I was just wondering if anyone knew any information on where to find construction materials for making a landscape / platform for models. Sort of like building a platform for the model/figure itself for a better shelf appeal. For example, maybe a skyscraper, house, street… if you know any sites post them, any information is much appreciated

try this one. http://www.woodlandscenics.com/ hope it helps

Thanks for the site EOD =), But just as I’ve been finding, it’s alot of stuff for hobby trains. I’m not looking for anything sophisticated, just something to make as a platform to accent the models / figures I do. I could just be creative and make it all myself I guess =O

Most people use plaques that you can pick up from any engaving/trophie shop. Some people will use picture frames by replacing the glass with a thin piece of plywood and then building the ground work up on top of it. Picture frames can be a much cheaper way to go. www.squadron.com has all kinds of diorama building materials. They carry the Andrea line of figure bases for figures as well as the Verlinden line of diorama items.

Thats something I had in mind ModelFreak, thanks for the reply :). I just think a model by itself isn’t as appreciateable as a Model with a themed platform / background with it.

You can get hardwood plaques at craft stores like Micheal’s or Hobby Lobby. You have to stain and seal them yourself, but w/ a little care they can look pretty good. Use polyurethane to seal them, it’s water-proof.

In the alternative, you can just paint them w/ a good sandable primer, sand them smooth and paint them the color of your choice.

If you’re in the mood for something simple and easy to do, I’ve used PVC plumbing connectors as bases before:

Plug one end w/ styrene sheet, and them fill it w/ your choice of material to give it heft (I prefer casting resin or old fashioned sand), then seal the other end. Good for column style bases.

If you want a dedicated model base, it’s relatively easy to make you own from styrene sheet. I posted some pictures of a simple base of this type in this thread:

Good luck w/ whatever you choose.
