Anti-glare under windscreen

Maybe this question should go under paint detail but I’ll try here first. [:^)]

I am painting a P-51C Mustang Red Tail and see the anti-glare oval drab stripe on the nose. I cannot find a picture that shows if it continues into the cockpit? The directions show silver there but I am certain that is incorrect.

Should I continue the olive drab or use a flat black under the cockpit windscreen?

Go with the flat black under the windscreen area.

The anti-glare panel is actually dark green FS 34079, if you do not have this color it is easy to make it mixing olive drab and black. Mix 1 drop black with 3 drop olive drab.

I second black under the windscreen. I do this on all my US aircraft.

Are you saying that the nose AND the cockpit anti-glare should be the dark green? Thanks as I have not shot it yet! [;)]

That’s N61429, actually the Southern Minnesota Wing of the CAF P-51C (Tuskegee Airmen) which is a restored P-51C that never went overseas during WW2… It was stricken from the USAAF inventory in 1945…

The paint, markings, and squadron codes all are partial representations of the various fighter squadrons (99th, 100th, 321st, & 322nd) in the 332 FG, with the name “By Request” a nod to COL Ben Davis’ aircraft, so it’s not a good representaion of a particular squadron’s markings. The yelow theater markings are indicative of MTO units.

Anti-glare panels were usually left OD (or repainted with Brit paint that was a shade or two “greener” than OD) on OD aircraft that had the paint removed in the field, with factory-painted black AG shields being applied after the USAAF decided to forego camouflaging their aircraft. That’s why you’ll see mixes of black and OD AG shields in the same units… The OD ones are simply older aircraft.

Hans, Thanks for the correction. I can see why Vet would be confused. To my old eyes its looks like a dark green shade that is almost black.
