I kindof took a short break from my modeling, mostly due to the nice weather and the fact that the river is full of salmon, but I sat down a worked a little on it last night. The fuselage halves are together with the office, and I started on the center wing assy. So far no problems with this one. Pics as soon as I have something worth seeing…
Wings are in work, and I’ve come across my first little hiccup. Nothing too bad, just the intakes on the leading edge of the center wing assy. They have a bit of a funky fit and require some filling and sanding. The outer wing assembly’s are together and through fit checking I don’t think they’re going to give me any grief, we’ll see.
Geoff-
I remember a lot of fiddling, filling and sanding to get mine to fit properly! Also, the fit of the outer wings to the center section can be a real bear. I ended up getting them as close as possible, then clamping them while the glue dried.
Geoff, as Frank mentioned, a little patience and some dry fitting/clamping and there should be no problems with the wing fit. I’ve heard of others drilling holes and bracing the wing with either wire or sprue, but mine went together with a little Tenax and super glue.
Geoff,
Thanks for this thread. There are some great links in it. Your cockpit looks really nice. I am building one too right now and no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t get the IP decal to line up perfectly either; I wonder if it just won’t or if it was my “user error.”
Leon
Thanks, Leon. I’ve seen a few finished pics of this kit and the IP seems fine, so I’m convinced it’s just “user error” as you said, at least that’s the case with me [D)]!
And thanks, guys, for all the pointers on the outer wings, I think this kit will be a good time to go buy some Tenax and give it a try.
Ok, I have a bunch of progress to report, but I’ve just been to busy to post. Here’s the update: Wings are complete, including some filling/sanding, rescribing, and of course, more sanding. All in all they were kindof a pain in the butt, but not too bad. The wing assembly is attached to the fuse, that went on without a single hitch, and required no sanding! Also done is my first attempt at preshading, personally, I think it may be a little too heavy, but we’ll see if maybe an extra layer of topcoat will cover it up enough. Some of the detail parts got a shot of pain tonight but nothing to show yet. Here’s some pics of the bird so far…
I got the engine assembly done. Base coat is MM gunmetal with Testor’s silver drybushing. I used some neutral grey for the gearbox housing and a touch of silver for the bolt heads. The pushrods are flat black. Here’s a shot of it before I close it up in the cowling.
Alright, I was looking (ok, glaring) at the not so good job I did on my preshading, and I decided that it was way too overdone. So, I striped it! I gave it a mineral spirits bath to wipe off most of the black. I think it will turn out much better this way:
I’ve found this a common problem on Corsair kits regardless of who made them. My Revell 1:32 took me 2 days to get the outer wings to match the center, and looks to be the same thing on the 2 Revell Monogram 1:48 kits I’m starting on now. They are the old Monogram too. Even still has the copyright 1963 date molded into them![(-D]
Well, I’m sure that most of you have forgotten about this build, which unfortunately has not budged for quite some time now. But, here are some pics of the progress before I put it on hold. I have the base paint job done and it’s ready for a little touch-up stuff and then it’s on to Future/Decals.
Oh, and here’s part of the reason why I’ve been distracted from modelling and haven’t worked on my build in so long:
NOTICE: This is a hunting pic and has nothing to do with modelling. Please understand that this pic is mildly graphic, so if you are easily offended by hunting and/or harvested game, don’t click this link. Otherwise, enjoy.
Wow! She looks great! It’ll be awhile before i start my corsair, but if mine turns out only half as nice as yours is, then i will be more than pleased![8D]
And congrats on the buck! Do i smell fresh venison cooking?[dinner]
Well, after over a year and a half, I finally finished my Corsair. Definately not my best work, but at least it’s done! Here’s some pics…feel free to critique!
Nice to see it finished! Very niceI know what it’s like to have a model come about slowly.
critique: needs a bit of exhaust staining and/or paint affected by exhaust to go with chipped paint. (opinion actually)
Yeah, this one could use a few things to make it better. I didn’t even do an oil wash on it. Like I said, not my best work at all, in fact I’m not 100% satisfied with the end result. It was just sitting in the cabinet for months and I finally got around to finishing it… gotten a little lazy in that department. Truthfully, I haven’t been modeling much lately, mostly due to the fact that I’ve picked up a new hobby that’s taking up most of my extra time.
Geoff,
Looks like a Corsair to me. And a damn fine one at that[tup]. The only real critique I can offer is that the kill marks are kind of crooked. I would have aligned them with the numbers and not the panel line (if that is what you did.)
Great job and thanks for sharing.
Regards,
Jeff
She definately looks amazing to me! I’m loving it![8D]
I’m not sure, but it looks like either there is a little of the paint chipping effect there, or I need to clean my computer screen. [:I]But I think it definately works!
sir, how you make that seat belts? its very nice and realistics. i just want to learn learn how you done that. im on my way doing my mirage 3 by hobbyboss and i want to make my seatbelt more realistic too.
its cool! nice work sir!
Doh! [banghead]
Jeff, you are correct indeed, thanks for pointing that out to me. I checked my photos of Ike’s plane and they clearly show the “29”/kill marks aligned with each other. I guess that’s what I get for going off a decal sheet diagram instead of pictures of the actual aircraft I’m attempting to model. What a blowout on my part!!! Oh, well, clear coat is on and it’s too late! LOL
DesertRat - The “paint chips” were done by tapping the painted surface with a silver art pencil. Tends to work better on flat paint than glossy. Of course this has to be done before clear coating otherwise the pencil will just wipe off.
Brownskin - Didn’t make the belts, I sort of cheated. That’s an Ultracast resin seat kit. If you haven’t tried one yet, I’d highly recommend it. I put them in all my builds. Super detail, and they’re cheap too. Best part is you usually get a spare seat incase you mess one up.
