I am finishing a 1/72 scale Bradley and I wanted to know with washes, do you “bathe” the whole vehicle with the wash or do you just hilight the bolts, panel lines, grilles, etc.
I am using the “soapy wash method” (1 part paint, 3 parts water, 1 part dish soap) and am quite happy with it. I have way overdone the wash twice now, and all I have to do to fix it is to wash the model and start over rather than scrap it or repaint.
Also how does the left over soapy wash affect the application of a dullcoat sealer.
Can’t help with the soap deal, but I most always just hit the points I want darkened up with the wash. Then I dry brush the whole vehicle being more aggressive with the high wear areas.
I use the soapy water method too and just brush over the areas I want darkened.
I use Future mixed with Tamiya Flat Base for my Dullcoat and have had no problems with airbrushing it over my wash. I wait 24 hours for my wash to dry first, and then the Future/Flat Base mixture seals it up quite nicely. [;)][^]
I usually wash the areas I want darkened. If I go overall, then I have to drybrush overall, and some areas just aren’t worth the effort (for me at least)

Hehe, as for the future question, read this issue of FSM. It’s got an article JUST on that. They reccomment the following ratios for the listed results. Keep in mind, these are overcoats (I assume):
1 part flat base to 3 parts future = dead flat
1 part flat base to 10 parts future = flat
1 part flat base to 15 parts future = satin
I also use the soapy water and have had no trouble putting enamel over it (Testor’s spray can).
I only apply it where I want it, not on the whole model
