I was playing one of my Air Combat sims and fouind the KI-61 Tony. When I selected it ,it had white bands around the Hinomarus but tail-flash identical to my Tony.My question is;which one is correct? Here is the screen-shot from the game.
The white bands, known as Home Defence Bandages, were applied starting in mid-1942 to first line aircraft based in Japan. The tail markings denote sentai, and the color denotes chutai. In this case, the Ki-61 would appear to be from 244th Sentai, 1st Chutai, which was based outside Tokyo.
Unless the aircraft was based elsewhere for some odd reason, it should have the bands.
Thanks!I wonder why the box art does not include the white bands. In any case they look cool and I think I will paint them on after the cammo is done!
I taped up the canopy today and will paint the airframe silver later on today.
Here is the Tony with two coats of Tamiya chrome silver. One more coat to go and then the fun part! The cammo!
Looking good! Have you seen wing_nut and doog’s hairspray tutorial for chipped paint? It would look great on your Tony! [tup]
Thanks, I’ll check it out!
I have painted the cammo free-hand.Next up,I have to paint the black-out panel and the red tail and horizontal stabilizers.

I painted the black-out panel, tail and yellow wing roots today.I have yet to decide wether to paint the white home-defence bands.
The cammo look’s real good, I like it.
By the way…it’s an anti-glare panel, not a black-out panel.
