A sad passing. Truly a man with a lot of history behind him.

Thank God for people like him and God bless him.

Sweeney’s co-pilot on the Nagasaki mission, Fred Olivi, passed away back in April.

I guess they’re together at the controls once again… [:)][:(]

Fade to Black…

Sorry to see another one gone. My condolences to his family.

Very sad to see the passing of another brave man. I’m just glad that men like he and Tibbits were able to see the neccessity of their missions. “Bock’s Car” is one of my favorite displays at Wright-Pat.

sure is sad, has the pilot of the Memphis Belle passed yet or is he still alive?

Sad … the passing of another hero from long ago … God Bless General Sweeney and his family …

Col. Robert Morgan of the Memphis Belle passed earlier this past spring … another hero from long ago …

A sad passing indeed. I’d gotten a chance to speak with General Sweeney a few years ago at one of his book signings. He was busy as anything, but took a few minutes out of his time to speak to a fledgling historian about his impressions of the B-29. He didn’t have to, but was rather impressed that someone my age (I was 23 at the time) was so interested in aviation history. We chatted for a few minutes and then he signed my copy of “War’s End”. A truly great man.

I’d heard about Bob Morgan recently too. Apparently he fell and broke his neck. One hell of a way to go. I’ve worked a few airshows with him, and he was one heck of a guy. I’ll never forget him passing me a beer after my show got rained out at the end of the day. He just told me to relax and drink up. He too will be missed.

Alas, we will probably only hear about more of these great men passing on in the coming years. Time wears down even the strongest of us.

They’ve truly “slipped the surly bonds of earth”
