Annual "what happened to AMTech" question.

Well, has AMTech faded away? I see Squadron has long-since dropped their “upcoming” kits from their pre-purchase list. I was so looking forward to not just their P-61 kits, but especially their experimental P-47 variants (XP-72, XP-47J).

Is there a company out there who might pick up those projects and get them to the hobby store shelves?

Well, the last AMTech kit was a P-40 I got at Hobby Lobby, and it plainly had printed on it “distributed exclusively by Hobby Lobby”.

Now it looks like to me that Hobby Lobby is cutting back on plastic model kits, as well as having to “dump” the AMTech kits at a bargain price (which is how I got mine), so “go figure”.[%-)]

I mean, I have yet to purchase an AMTech kit that I can build OOB without some sort of prescribed “surgery” that constitutes a “pain in the rear” in order to correct the innacurate plastic molding they provided with the kit, as compared with Tamiya, Hasegawa, Accurate Minitures or Monogram or Revell.

I do not think the typical modeler is looking for the kit maker to knowingly add to his list of headaches for just building the dang thing without even mentioning it on the outside of the box. [:(]

Is the Tamiya AMTech kit any good then? the Ta-183 Huckebein

I built the Tamiya/Amtech 183 some time ago and found it fine apart from the price. I had a few sink marks in the nose mouldings and didnt like the very short intake hole, but covered this with a circular card disc like you see on 262s. the only other gripe was the deal sheet which they had taken from their 190 kit.

John - if I am not mistaken someone else is coming out with the experimental P-47 designs… let me check in to it and see if this failing brain can remember who it was…

im a bit disapointed about the decal sheet, the price i got it for was £15 not bad since it was £40+ i think

great finish on yours, is the tailer scratchbuilt

Yes, I reasoned that if Germany was to continue the war expensive stuff like vehicles would be hard to come by and so I designed a trailer that would take the oil drums and tow it to the plane, the idea being that a compressor would pressurise the drum and force fuel out (thats what the top piping is for) to another pump which would supply to the a/craft.

Built from a Tamiya fuel drum set, evergreen strip, the wheels and mudguards are from an Aifix OO/HO vehicle kit and bits from the spares box and a few swear words as required.

Glad you like it.

Oh, th Ta-183 is a beautiful kit. As mentioned, the intake sucks (no pun), being only a round indentation. And if you want to be strict, the cockpit is way too deep - it should all be above the level of the intake trunk. Otherwise, beautiful kit with beautiful molding.

Here are the two I built:

But it’s also true that their other kits are not the best. I guess that’s to be expected, since most of their other kits are reissues of older AMT kits with some new parts! I was looking forward to more original kits with the quality of the Ta-183.

And I knew there would be no more Luft '46 kits out of AMTech when I talked to Dan Johnson, who was royally pissed that they basically stole all the research work he and his artist provided them, without compensation, and swore he’d never talk to them again.
