An Oldbie Newbie

Greetings.

I am just now taking up modeling again after an extended hiatus.

Actually, I accepted an overseas in Europe. It took a year to sell the house, etc, two years there, and now after a year back I am finally getting unpacked. I thought ahead when I packed for the assignment and I included two large boxes with models, tools, etc. Enough to keep me busy for two years. Well, the moving company mixed up some boxes and I arrived with models but no tools at all. Not wanting to buy everything twice, I temporarily dropped the hobby.

Actually, that’s not quite accurate. While I was in Europe I picked up a paper model of Reims Cathedral. The model comes as sheets and sheets of preprinted flying buttresses, etc. It only takes a hobby knife, white glue, and lots of time and patience to build an impressive model. That’s quite a departure from my usual interests of cars and military aircraft, but it scratched my modelling itch, and even my wife agrees the model looks good in the living room.

I have become pretty rusty - especially in airbrushing and painting tiny details. My eyes aren’t what they were four years ago, and neither is my patience… Middle age setting in, I suppose.

All I have attempted so far is a Tamiya Benetton 189. I should give it the final coat of Future this weekend.

I am going to ignore the half-closet I have of unbuilt models and order one or two of the best new kits (much to my wife’s dismay). What all new kits would you suggest for the following subjects?

  1. Automobile - 1/24
  2. Aircraft - 1/48 Jet or WWII
  3. Armor (I’m branching out a bit).

I have no attachment for any particular era - I just love building a great kit!

Welcome to FSM ChemMan. Good to have you join us here.

See you around the Armour Forum.

Welcome ChemMan, If your looking for a high quality kit, just pick a Hasegawa or Tamiya kit of the subject your interested in. You’ll surely have a great kit to build.[;)]

Welcome to FSM, ChemMan. I’d echo Woody’s choices.

As far as a new auto kit goes…cant go wrong with any offerings from Tamiya…Ive actually heard very very good things about the Revell 40 Coupe…Just depends on what suits your tastes!

Welcome Aboard! [#welcome]

Welcome, ChemMan! If I might suggest, pick out a subject first, then pick out the brand. Might be easier that way.

Im pretty intrigued about that paper cathedral you built, can you post a photo of that here? Thanks!

Welcome mate. Join the best club in town…
