Greetings, I took time away from building aircraft and armor to do a small toot on Paint Stripping. (in techniques) My victim or maybe I was the victim was an ebay score unbuilt but Custom Painted 68 Camaro.Nothing like a Nice thick John Deere Green Runny Paint Job In the Bath of Simple Green,After a 26 hour soak,The Subframe needed to have those hollow channels filled in, I covered them over with some .020" styrene. Also built the Upper Shock Towers from some shaped Sprue. I wont even tell you how many of these I made because the [censored] Black Hole kept getting them. Here is a teaser of the Body. Resin Parts are from Time Machine Resin. Does anyone know of a Model Paint that will replicate a Vinyl Roof ?
WOW Man! I can’t believe how that “Simple Green” works so well!
Looking cool!
This is so weird–I just won a 75 Camaro off ebay for my girlfriend, but had to take it apart and redo the interior in black–she used to drive one just like it, but with a black (not light blue) iterior!
Nice to see an unwanted model being brought back to life.
What exacty is “simple green?” Will it strip anything or only certain types of finishes. Can it strip chrome? And most impotantly can I get it here in Canada?
As for vinyl, I have read that some people use masking tape painted black to simulate a vinyl top.
I’m working on a convertable '69 Camaro myself. My first model since getting back into the hobby last fall. I’ll post pics when it is done.
After looking at many of the threads posted, and seeing Doog’s Nomad & Roadrunner plus Butz’s project I was inspired enough to Drag this thread out of the Tomb and finish it up. When I left off on this project the chassis was painted with Model Master Enamels, I mixed Gloss Black and Flat Black to get that Chassis Semi Gloss color. Scratch built a fuel pump from a piece of sprue. A piece of copper speaker wire was fabbed into a fuel line. The pre wired distributer was an ebay purchse. I used my modelers knife and a small file to thin down the fan belt to a more realistic thickness.
On the Body I fabricated two quarter window frames from some .010" styrene. Primered the body with rattle can Krylon Primer, Wet sanded with 1000 & 1200 grit sandpaper. Loaded up the old Aztec Airbrush with Model Master Enamel Paint and painted away.
So there is where I left off and as it sits for now. Stay Tuned for the Next Update.
Denis I apoligize for not seeing your question sooner - Simple Green will not strip Chrome finish. (Oven Cleaner like Easy Off will ) I use it for enamel finishes but I have heard it will clean off acrylic in a matter of hours.
All I have to say is Wow… Talk about just givin a lil TLC to an unwanted model!! Do you have any close ups of your wiring of the engine?
Simple Green rocks for sure… I beleive you mentioned something about Easy Off for chrome removal? How is that? For me when I took off the chrome on the Nova, I used ammonia… A lil potant but w/ in a half hour it was down to bare plastic… And I did not even have to scrub…
By the way, what colour did you paint your Camero? My Dad’s 67 was Plum Purple…!!!
PS, I showed my Dad the pix of your Project Car and I think I saw a tear form… Now he is searching through old pix for his car… THANK YOU…!![;)]
And most of all, I am glad I could help re-light that fire…!! Looking forward to seeing her done!!
Smeagol - Simple Green is a All Purpurse Cleaner that can be found in most Stores in the Household or Automotive Sections . I have heard there is a copycat cleaner sold by wallyworld also, but since I do not shop there I can’t tell you if it works the same.
Butz here are the best closeups I can take, any larger and the flaws really jump out [sigh]
Not sure what angle you were looking for. The Timing Order is correct so it wont Backfire when fired up… [(-D]
…
Post a pic of your Dad’s Camaro if he comes across a picture. I wont tease him with pics of the '68 I have here in my yard. Well I lied here it is [}:)]
Take Care & thanks for the compliments. I will let you know the color later. I misplaced the paint jar…
it looks great so far, but I wanted to put my input about paint removal thing though.
I use Purple Power to remove paint, it seems to work pretty fast, and it removes chrome, at least it did the one time I forgot and dropped a chrome peice in it ^^;
The only place I’ve seen it is Dollar General ($6 for a pretty large bottle) but I’m sure other stores carry it too.
Just FYI but for chrome removal I always use oven cleaner. Spray it on the part and close it in a ziplock baggy or equivalent and the chrome literally melts off the part in seconds, not hours.
I’ve also heard auto brake fluid will remove paints from parts fairly easily, though I haven’t tried that one myself.
Still lookin… He narrowed it down to two spots… LOL However I can show ya a project car he and I have been workin on for the last three years and it’s almost done…A ground up restoration to boot.
And to think we bought it from an elderly lady for $4500…
It aint much…!!![;)] It’s a one of 71’ Mach 1 Stang…
