I typically only go to Hobbytown because they have a good stock of Model Master and Tamiya paint (well…not the newer Tamiya colors…but anything up through the XF60s). Almost never buy kits there because 1) the selection is laughable and 2) the prices are even more laughable.
But today, I swung by at lunch to grab a spare bottle of XF-62 Olive Drab and happened to pass by their tiny clearance shelf.
Usually these kits are the saddest of the sad, and the discounts only make them slightly more expensive than you can find online.
But today, they had a 1/48 Tamiya Mustang III sitting in the pile for $15!
Outside of vendor tables, it’s probably the best deal I’ve ever snagged on a kit.
Too bad the aftermarket markings are such slim pickings.
One of the included options is an awesome sharkmouth…but it’s a birdcare, and I was kind of leaning toward a Malcolm hood. But…shark mouth > Malcolm hood. Also, on the plus side, I’ve read the decals were printed by Scalemaster, and thus superior to your average Tamiya sheet.
SWEET! Ya HobbyTown is only good for paint. However, I got the Hasegawa 190 with BMW car there for little over $20 once. Prices are normally insane. Sales…few and far between and the one here locally is owned by an azzhat.
I am not Mustang expert, so these may not be what you need. Just did a search for 1/48th P-51B decals on hannants and came up with 45 results. Are any of these any good.
The Hobby Town 20 Minutes to the south doesnt have much for models but I go there for paint. Now if I drive 45 minutes north to Green Bay, I’ve never seen a better model selection before.
I guess it depends on which one you go to and where you live.
I have 7 Mustangs in the stash, two or three of which are tamiya.
I hit a 75% off rack at my local Hobbytown. Got the Tamiya StuG III B for $12 among my haul. I sadly passed on a Tamiya Me-262 for around the same price. Should have grabbed it.
Yea the Hobbytown near me ain’t all that great price wise. They bot a whole wall dedicated to kits, but the prices are high. Like most of you, I ususally just go there for paint. Although last time, I saw a F4U Corsair and bought it, cause I wanted one, and it was just convient to get it there.
I actually got a good deal at the one in South Austin a couple of months ago. Got the Academy 1/35 M3 Honey for $15. Pretty decent little kit, just needs a few minor tweaks. Best deal I’ve gotten at Hobbytown on a kit. Oh, and I bought a RG Ho-229 for $15 on the same trip - I’ve been looking for one of these and this was the first one I’ve seen in quite a while so I snagged it.
A couple of years ago, I bought a bunch of Gunze acrylics for a buck apiece and several Squadron books for $2 apiece at a Hobbytown in Dallas when they were closing out both lines.
But usually purchases are just limited to magazines and some MM paints.
I do have to say that my local Hobbytown is actually reasonable. But that’s because models aren’t the major sellers (RC and Warhammer are) and I know the owner personally :). That said, guess I’ve not got much room to talk here, do I? [:^)]
Agree with Dogs on Hobbytown in general. Mine has a great paint selection but the kit selection is bad and is actually getting worse. I too recently noticed the clearance shelf but nothing as good as what Doogs hit on.
Once in a great while you can get lucky there, unfortunately it is’nt that often. Mainly go there for paint as there is no other local source. We have a city of 600,000 and still no really good shop to visit.[:'(]
