Amtank colours

I’m just thinking about which model from my stack to do next. One of the favourites is the Revell Germany (ex Italeri) 1/35 LVT(A)1 Amtank. I built the Amtrack a couple of years ago, so I’m familiar with the basic issues concernig the kit.

There are two sorts of colour schemes suggested. One is OD overall, and the other is a sort of darkish battleship grey. Revell suggest a mix of 80% Blue-grey Revell 79, and 20% White. My expereince of Revell kits, however, suggests that these mixed colours are often available, ready-mixed, eleswhere.

Could anyone tell me, therefore:

  1. What was the name of this grey colour in real life? Does it have a FS number?
  2. Are there any off-the-peg equivalents available, especially in the Humbrol and Tamiya paint ranges?
  3. Are there any fading/ weathering issues that I should be particularly aware of with this colour?

Thanks for your help, guys.

Chris.

Chris,
Lots of good reference out there on the web. Do a Google image search.
Found this one for you http://www.digitaldioramas.com/2003/issue7/dd_tarawa.htm
Even though he used a different version of Amtrack, the colors are the same. He used Humbrol 106 Ocean Gray.
I think Testors Model Master has a Battleship grey which would also work.

Thanks for that, philp! Humbrol Ocean Grey seems a good idea, especially if the Amtank concerned has been exposed to salt water and lots of southern Pacific sunshine. Impressive figures in that diorama!
