AMT Peterbuilt Tow truck build log update 5-31-26

Started with the engine on this kit. Have the basic engine together and primed. I think it is a W459 by Cummins, probably wrong though.

Then a base paint of khaki was added.

Will get some detail painting and weathering on it next.

Hello!
Nice work on the engine. It sure looks like a Cummins. You might want to check out the colour, though - unless you say it’s a swap. I read somewhere that the engines installed in the Paccars were repainted different colour - I believe white - like I said you might want to research that.

Also - you might want to consider adding some fuel, oil and electrical lines made out of thin wire (copper and solder are best) - this adds a lot to the appearance of the engine. Example:

1:24 Cummins NTC 450 by Pawel Mroczkowski

And after painting:

1:24 Mack RW Superliner by Pawel Mroczkowski

And that also reminds me, that the transmission would be different colour - blue for Fuller RoadRanger.

Hope this helps - good luck and have a nice day!

Thank you so much, this gives me a lot of help. I did try to research online, but could not quite find an engine exactly like mine. So, just used some references to get an idea of how it should look. I do plan on adding additional piping, it is still in the early stages. Yes, exactly, was planning this as an engine swap. The instructions said the engine should be white, but i saw a khaki one online and liked that better.

Yesss, I know, nothing going on here. I am working on it. Started on the chassis, suspension, airbrakes and axles. In typical AMT fashion, the molds are old and few to none locater holes, the axel halves and airbrake bags do not line up. I am spending quite a bit of time puttying (is that a word?)and sanding them. I don’t think anyone needs or wants to see pictures of that. So, I will get some progress pics up once the chassis is closer to being complete.

excited to see how this turns out, I know the old AMT trucks are a challenge to say the least

I actually got something done over the weekend. A little rear suspension work. Still have some shocks to put on and air brake plumbing. Still, it is progress.

Hello! Have the chassis together. Thought I would try my hand at installing air lines. They are probably now where near correctly placed. Then painted the whole thing with vallejo lime green. I will pick out details by brush painting and do some weathering as well. The engine is just there for show, it needs more work.

Well, weathered the chassis the best that I could. Happy with the results, but I can see where I could improve as well.

Attached the wheels.

Started painting the body too.

That is where it is at this point.

Moving along, started on the towing section. Everything is pretty much together (still not attached to the chassis yet) will need some touch up painting. Also have weathering to do as well.

Sorry about the lighting, sun is coming strong through my window.

Turning out to be a good build. Like the weathering on the chassis.

Thanks Mustang, this one is going slow. Just have not been making the time to sit at the bench here lately.

Hey NucMedTech, nice work on this build. Looking forward to the finished product. It’s a cool subject. Good looking rig.

Thanks Peter, trying to stay motivated. Hopefully this will finish up well.
