Could anyone point me in the direction of some info showing the inside layout of the US Army/American Red Cross Clubmobiles used (mostly) in the UK in 1943-44…?
I am particularly after the layout of the British-built AEC Regal 10T10 (civilian) buses taken over for ARC duties, rather than later Clubmobiles developped from military stock vehicles.
Also, were the uniforms worn by the driver and the three female crew members typical of the US Army, or were they different?
Thanks! I am familiar with this site and have read some of the books shown in the Links page, but there’s little in there to feed my interest in this particular type of Clubmobile. I’m pretty sure the equipment was similar, but the layout must have been radically different…
Can’t find any color pics, other an ARC Nurse’s Uniform, which is pink… The ARC Canteen Workers uniforms appear to be khaki in the B&W photos, I also recall seeing some in a “powder-blue” shade as well as some Army Officers’ shades of green for the wool winter uniform jackets and shirts… Do a Google Image search on WW2 American Red Cross Uniforms and see if you can drum up some more…
Thank you Gentlemen…! The book ‘Slinging Doughnut for the Boys’ make passing and tentalising references to the inside layout and uniforms, but it’s not clear enough. I’ve contacted the author, just in case.
The uniforms worn by the Doughnut Dollies (in the UK) are described as being ‘RAF Blue’, though there is several mentions of different types of hats (for winter, summer,…) and added ‘personnal’ touches, such as red scarves and the like (the Red Cross apparently OK’ed such items if they were red!). And the driver was British (made sense given the vehicle had to negotiate small winding country roads, often in the dark), but there is no references to his uniform…
Robbioo - Black Lion are indeed making a sheet that includes markings for a Clubmobile and will in time do the markings for the RetrokiT clubmobile (RetrokiT, it’s me…!)
