american aa

who makes american anti-aircraft without being part of a larger kit, in 1:35 scale? none of the major companies i’ve looked at do.

the closest your find will be Tamiyas M16 halftrack,
there might be some resin kits out there

WW2 or modern? In WW2, there is the M16 halftrack as mentioned. Monogram did an M15 AAA halftrack (OOP).

Modern kits are the Tamiya M42 Duster and the Sgt. York, Italeri M163 Vulcan, Avenger and LAV-25 ADA variant. Academy also does an M163A1 Vulcan.

Esci did an Avenger as well (OOP) and Renwal (Reboxed by Revell and Matchbox) M42 Duster (OOP).

i mean wwii- there are so many german aa kits, but why no american?

I think because Americans didn’t have as many types of aa.
British had the bofors but as far as I know americans only had the m16. Im not sure about the last part though.

The US didn’t have to worry has much about German a/c attacking as the germans did

There were actually more US AAA pieces rthan just the M16 Halftrack. There were all sorts of 40mm bofers mounts to include the M15 Halftrack, towed 40mm pieces and a few M3 based AAA guns as well. I think the problem is the same with most WWII modeling. The majoriy of kits are Axis. We have ten thousand different Tiger and King Tiger kits and a few Shermans. For some reason I can’t understand, the German stuff sells better, or at least that is how the model companies perceive it.

as grandadjohn mentioned, the allies pretty much had air superiority when the US landed at Normandy, so probably didn’t the need for as many AA variants as the Germans did.
I would be interested in a towed allied AA if there was such a thing?

From what I’ve read, the M-16 quad-fifty was the only halftrack used in the Korean War, where the quad-fifty mount was very effective against Chinese human wave attacks. I think some M-16 halftracks were also used for convoy duty in Vietnam. (I just built one of these a couple of months ago, so I dont recall if I read this on the instruction sheet or in the Squadron US Halftracks book.)

There is a resin kit of the Bofors for a Pricey $100! If your looking for towed pieces, I have seen a quad gun set on a trailer.

If you are patient, Italeri is releasing a Crusader AA in 1/35.
Looks very promising.

Hey all. I found this with a search. You have to be picky about the wording in the seach for US AA stuff. This has a couple of good picts and info.

Too bad that there isn’t more American equipment out there in kit form. A lot of these are just crying to be released as kits.

O.K. I did a search at GM for the M1 40 MM and what a sticker shock!!! [:O]

Holy Wah!!!

thanks for doing the research, but honestly, 133 $ is way to much for one little kit!

I’m with you, though you peaked my interest. I see they have a barrell for the M1 40 MM. Might be a good scratch build on a Duece &1/2.

And don’t forget the US M1 90mm AAA, a gun all-round superior to the 88mm German version at AA work (fire control by radar didn’t hurt). It is absolutely ridiculous that there is no kit of this fine, important weapon, even from a garage kit company.

They did fire on German and Japanese aircraft, with excellent results. (The big 90s helped defend Henderson Field on Guadalcanal. People still find spent 90mm cartridges there today.) It had better AP penetrative abilities as well, but never as far as I know had to use them. I don’t know how good the sights were against ground targets in direct fire, but they were often used, with excellent results, as indirect fire artillery.

We also had a 120mm heavy AA gun, also called the M1 (what wasn’t? [(-D]), fire controlled by radar, but those were almost exclusively deployed in the US. They defended strategic targets, such as the Panama Canal Zone.

if you know of any good us towed artillery for 10$ or under (i’m on a budget), that would work too. Thanks!

Under $10? You have several options that are close to that price. Italeri does the M101 105mm towed howitzer and the M1 155mm towed howitzer. The 155 is probably around $15+ though. Zvezda reboxes the old Italeri 6 pdr anti-tank gun this was also used by the US as the 57mm anti-tank gun.

scalelink also does the 40mm in 35th scale but not much cheaper. Think H&R products still has a 32nd scale version in their line but it is designed for a PT boat.

The bofors was the most popular US aa gun with the Quad 50’s as the other main aa weapon. Of course, on ships you had the dual and quad 40’s and 20mm.
