the weathering was a combo of airbrushing and pastel chalks. to achieve the splotchy paint job (which the pics really don’t show up as well as in person), i mixed the base color, and then from the base color i mixed a shade or 2 lighter, and a shade or 2 darker mixture. first, i applied the darkest color to the entire top surface, and from the article i read in FSM mag last year, i stole the “salt” chipping idea, and i twisted it into my own evil plan!![}:)] i loaded up some tap water in my airbrush and sprayed my model, then i covered my entire model with table salt, i grouped it into big chunks, little chunks, down to the smallest grain with a small paint brush. when this dried, i sprayed the base color and removed the salt with a fresh water wash down. when this dried, i covered the model in water and salt once again, let it dry, and then spayed the lightes mixture, paying close attention to the center of panels and the upper most surfaces of the plane where the sun is beating down the longest and most. when this was dried, i didn’t remove the salt yet, i loaded the darkest color back in the airbrush and ever so subltly followed along a few of the panel lines to darken them just a hair. then, removed the salt, let the kit dry ofcourse, and sprayed the future, applied the decals, and let them cure. the next day i applied the wash, let it dry overnight, then applied a flat coat using Polly Scale clear flat, began the pastel weathering of the decals and upper surfaces once again with some white chalk and light gray chalk. some brown was used to streak the fueling access doors on both wings. some drybrushing was also used to fade things, especially the walkways on both wings, they were especially hard to get faded with pastels for some reason. this was my first try with pastels and i wasn’t all that thrilled with them, i’d rather fade things out with my trusty ol’ iwata to be honest, but they definetly have there place in the scheme of things.

Chris, I used the pastels on the fuel doors and some prominent wing features in the past to acheive the streaking you talking about too. What I did was apply the pastel, then with a DAMP not wet tip of a paper towel (have even used my finger as well)lightly zip down the chalk mark to make it look more like a liquid stain… I found the same problem with the walkways as well using chalk (on my SBD)
I’m gonna try out that weathering method. you ought to submit that to readers tips on the mag… the chipping idea isn’t new… but using it for sun-fading is… outstanding overall effect!!!
hmmm dare I try it on my Typhoon I am building now? I’ll have to print out your method and walk through it in my mind a few more times before I decide… I am doing another SBD soon for a GB maybe I can try it on there…
anyway, looks GREAT bubba! you’re not showing any rust at all ofr being out of it for a bit!!!
