You might try without the gloss black. It could be creating such a smooth surface that the Alclad has nothing to “grab”. You can also try to put something else over it like future…it could help seal it and keep from rubbing off.

Question - Is the black paint and the primer coming off with the Alclad? Or just the Alclad? This could help narrow down exactly which layer has the problem.

No its just the alclad that rubs off if you dont use the black the alclad does not shine like it should

You’re right about the gloss black. Airframe aluminum is one of the “high shine” finishes and needs the black undercoat.

What kind of black? Acrylic, Enamel or Lacquer? Did you use anything on the black undercoat: rubbing compound, polish etc.? I use gloss black lacquer exclusively, and I have polished the undercoat to get a good surface–after it cures–and as long as you clean off any polish or compound before the final coat it should work. I usually wash with a very diluted detergent solution and rinse thoroughly.

It sounds like the paint is drying before it hits the surface. Spray fairly close to the work and use a low pressure. I usually spray Alcad II at 10~12psi, with the airbrush adjusted for a low paint flow. Spray several light coats.

Good luck, and I hope this helps.

I am using enamel. i might be using a to high presure i will try with a lower presure. thank you for your help, will let you know how it comes out. I want to build a 1/24 scale p-51 mustang but dont want to spray it untill i have the alclad right.

thank you

Mike

i always use the alclad brand primer and an under coat for my alclad finishes and have never had any problems. alclad has gloss black primer as well as a grey primer, both lacquer based, and they work great.
