Alclad applied over MM metalizer?

Hi guys!

I saw an article somewhere on the world wide web where a guy used Alclad Gunmetal as his basecoat rather than Alclad’s gloss black. So last night I was painting the horizontal stabilizers (still on the sprue) of my P-47 and I was thinking “Hey! I’ll give the gunmetal color a try, too.” So I used the MM gunmetal from the rattle can. After I applied it, I immediately thought “Hmmm…the other guy used Alclad as his base coat. I’m using Model Master metalizer. Will the Alclad top coat be adversely affected by the Model Master gunmetal metalizer paint underneath?” Has anyone had any experience with this?

Thanks!

Eric

Did the guy burnish the MM Metalizer before applying Alclad? I have never used MM Metalizer under Alclad, but MM Metalizer tends to be pretty rough until they are burnished.

Not sure. He didn’t say. The guy on the web site used Alcald gunmetal as his base coat while I’m using MM gunmetal. Eventhough it seemed to go on pretty smooth, I’m still going to polish it. My question was whether MM metalizer can be used as a base coat under Alclad.

Eric

Hi folks. Just wanted to give a follow-up in case anyone was curious. Last night I applied several coats of Alclad over the MM gunmetal buffing metalizer. It went over it just fine with no attacking of the underlying MM paint. The MM gunmetal provided some tonal variation to the Alclad just as I had hoped. I also used some Testors gloss blue (from the little square bottles) in spots as well and it, too, helped to give some tonal variety.

In the next couple of weeks, I hope to post some pictures of the end result. Please be patient since I am agonizingly slow when it comes to my builds.

Best wishes,

Eric

[:)] Hi once again. I don’t mean to keep reviving an older thread but I felt the need to pass this on in case someone was going to try this. In my previous statement, I said that Alclad worked just fine over MM metalizers. This is true but with an important caveat. I noticed that Alclad, when sprayed over MM metalizers and then masked over with blue lo-tack masking tape, WILL LIFT OFF!!!

So beware. You can spray Alclad over MM metalizers but you just can’t mask the Alclad afterwards. When I masked over the Alclad, which was painted over Testor’s gloss black, it worked just fine with no lifting.

I hope this helps,

Eric

Excellent tip, Eric. Good to know the follow up, that would be enough to make me rip my hair out.

Good to see a familiar face from “the old days”, too!

This can happen.MM as base cost then AlcLad .may result in “Lift Off “.In other words when adding other panels it may lift when using masking tape of any kind.Use Tamiya gloss black over your construction primer .Then use the MM color as a final base coat. This combination holds strong on the bare plastic.
