This is my latest project it is the Alan kit with the eduard PE upgrade of the not so well know PZ II J of which 22 were produced between april and december of 1942 before production was stopped, it was designed as an heavily armoured infantry support tank and most served on the eastern front but some may have seen action on the western front also and one was known to have been converted into a bergepanzer. the only refs i have on this vehicle are a couple of pics found on the web.
The kit
This is where it is at right now, so far the only problems i have had is with the tracks they do not fit together well and dont fit the sprocket either so surgery was needed but i think with some decent weathering they will turn out ok, i used a spare barrel i had not sure of the brand, basically all that remains is adding some weld beads and some small detail work and the tools.
Here’s the PZIIF that I built by Alan; I think it’s basically the same kit but with a diiferent calibre gun? I put a spare gas can rack on it, from a picture I found of it. I think it is a sweet little build! Your PE looks great!
Hey Doogster, nice job i love the camo thats kinda what i was thinking for this one i will keep that pic for reference, thats actually the PZ I F though, they are very similar the rear engine deck is different and the turret but it looks like the hull and running gear and tracks are the same, i did mine in grey [:)]
If it were anyone else who had put this together so quickly, I’d be shocked, but since it’s you Ron, it’s par for the course! [(-D] Looking sharp so far. [tup]
Didn’t you post a finished build earlier today?! Yikes, this guy’s out of control. You were gone from modelling for a few months, and in the last week you’ve completed more models than I did in the entire time you were gone.
Ian that grey one above was done last year i havent finished building this one yet heh.
Mikael i did use the same method for the tracks i have used it or something similar for a while now here is couple of a links to articles i did that shows the steps a little and may help you out.
Doog i have built a couple of the alan kits now and your dead right these are probably the easiest yet although i actually do like alan kits (im a sucker for punishment heh) i just find the subjects cool and they are fun to do but definatly rough around the edges.
Glad to see your build blog as I am doing the same build at this time.According to your pictures,I am about two parts ahead of you.I do not know if you are aware of an article in AFV Modeler #14 that shows all the improvements that should be done to this kit.The article is really well done.If you do not have the issue, you can download the article from AFV Modeler in a color PDF format for $2.You get it right now.Hope this info. is of some use to you.Really enjoy yours and Bills builds.Thanks. Ted Nichols
Looks almost ready for the paint-shop! Those fenders are a very nice addition…tackling an Alan kit takes guts and you have whipped this one…those look a lot like the later “Luchs” recon tanks, which were also very rare…nice build…
Hi Ted, thank you for the info that is exactly what i needed i was kinda stalling on the detail work hoping i would come up with some more decent refs but was running out of hope it seems there isnt much as far as photos go on this one but that article is perfect and i have resumed work, i wont be doing everything exactly the same but i definatly have direction now and thank you for checking out my builds im really glad they are of interest to you i know they are a good learning tool for myself, finding out about that article for this one is a perfect example [:)]
Hi Manny, still a ways off from painting at this point, it looks more than is right now but since i have the article Ted suggested i can move along with it, i think after the “heavily armoured infantry support tank” idea was dissmissed the “luchs” was the next progression which was the light recon vehicle and i agree there is a similar look to them.
Hi Specter, thanks for checking it out man, i really know little about this one other than what i mentioned previously and what little i found on the web, basically it was a design that began in around 1939 and by the time it started production in 1942 it was obsolete, successful or not it still is one cool looking tank heh.
Hi Panzerguy, lol sleeps fer sissy’s , i just get in the build zone sometimes and i just go with it, i like to get some of the “lesser” kits in my stash done and i do get a lot of pleasure out of these type of builds
Thanks again everyone for the interest and coments.
Hi lads, i have been plugging away on this one and i have decided its ready for paint, i used the article from AFV Modeler #14 by Julian dace as a guide as suggested by Ted and because of it i believe i was able to get much more out of this kit than i would have both pleasure wise and detail wise so thanks again Ted.
The following list explains what was done.
Eduard upgrade was used.
Griffon tool and box clasps were used.
All the tools were replacements from the spares box or heavily modified kit items.
Weld beads from stretched sprue.
Main gun Barrel were replaced from unknown source, MG was a spare dragon one.
headlights were drilled and modified with plastic card and wiring was added.
fender boxes were scratch built or modified kit ones.
Chains were added to the smoke rack and the box modified.
Antenna base was scratch built and moved from the forward left of the engine deck to the rear right.
Cut was added to seperate the upper deck which was welded from the engine deck which was bolted.
Any questions feel free to ask and thanks for looking.
