Airplane on railroad flatcar

Hello all,
I am a model railroader and would like to model a WWII era fighter on a 1/87 flatcar. I model 1953 and this would make me eligible for a Korian War candidate also. Would an aircraft have ever travelled by rail in the US? Perhaps to a dispay or a museum? I realize that the wings would have to be removed and sucured. The landing gear would have to fit on the flatcar deck which is 9’6" wide and 52" long. I would be willing to use a 1/100 model, it would only be 13% too small. There is a nice P-38 and a P-51 in 1/87 that I could use but the P-38 gear would be way too wide though. I would appreciate any help.

My uncle crashed landed a P-40 at a small civilian air field during his training days in WWll. He said the aircraft had its wings removed and was shipped via rail to the repair depot.

Why not cut the P-38 up and make it look like it is being crated. That is probably how it would have been moved anyhow, in pieces. I’m sure if you check sources you will find a picture of a disassembled P-38 or other fighter. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the ideas. As for transporting a wrecked or crated plane , is there a place on the web were I could check out some photos or get more ideas?
Would a military plane have been accompinied by guards or a security force if it were being transported?

I’ve often thought of this as a diorama. A couple of the Monogram (the publisher, not the model company) books on German aircraft include diagrams of how the plane was broken down and crated for shipping on a flatcar. I’ve wanted to do that with DML’s Horton flying wing. Anybody know wher I can get a 1/48 (or O-Gauge) German wwII flat car?

Hello,
maybe you can take a german WW 2 aircraft and put it on your flatcar, showin a transport to museum
aand in 19455/46 most of the german ac´s were brought to the evaluation points by RR
