Airplane canopy painting

Hello all, i recently watched a video on the different methods of canopy painting, the advice shown was to insert poster putty up inside the canopy for better handling, once i removed the putty i found some still sticking, i tried removing it with a q-tip, fingernail, only to smear it and cloud the canopy, any advise is greatly appreciated on how to clean the smeared putty and a better approach to stabilize the canopy without putty, thanks.

No airbrush? Probably the best way is to mask and then spray it with the rest of the plane.

If not,you could roll low tact tape and attach it to the the right size dowel, and then press the canpoy on to the dowel with just enough pressure to hold it.

At the risk of being Mr Obvious, have you tried taking a fresh piece of poster putty attached to a toothpick and dabbing it on the stuck piece? I find that works fairly well when I’m cleaning off the putty I used for masking along paint lines.

I tend to paint the canopy before attaching to the cockpit-I generally line the interior with some 3M blue tape and then us Silly Putty to fill the interior of the canopy to add some strength when handling-you can also stick a toothpick thru the Silly Putty for handling.

When I have used poster tack or Silly Putty inside a clear piece like that, I have used a little bit of weak ammonia solution (ie, Windex, with ammonia) on a Q-tip, to wipe away residue.

I have to say that I didn’t use the putty to hold the canopy for painting before installing it, though. I paint my canopies already installed as much as is possible. But working with a vacuform canopy, I used Silly Putty to fill the canopy for better rigidity while I cut it from the carrier plastic.

This always works for me to remove it :backhand_index_pointing_up:t2::backhand_index_pointing_up:t2::backhand_index_pointing_up:t2:

I’ve had similar issues, how I just use the minimum, preferably around the edges because that stuff is a pain to get off. I’ve used IPA with some success on a q-tip to clean it after doing as was recommended above, using a fresh piece to try and get it all.
