Airfix Typhoon step by step build!

[:0]I’ve just got airfixs 1/72 Typhoon which I am going to upgrade it by scratchbuilding a new cockpit , landing gear and wheel wells , and reccesed panel lines.[V]
I’m hopefully going to post some pictures so I can show you all how it is going as i build it so I will post some soon![:D]

Happy modeling ! Sounds like a neat project.

I have a few Airfix 1/72 kits in the “to build” stash that I’ll start on when I finish the 1/48 B-24 that I’m working on. I’ve found that the quality of the airfix kits varies quite a bit. I’ve got a P-40 that will take some work to make it look nice. But I’ve got a Spit Mk I that looks good and a Bristol Bulldog that I think is really impressive. How’s the Typhoon kit ?

Chris

Good luck on the Airfix Typhoon. Waiting to see the Pic’s.

Regards, Rick

The Typhoon is pretty good in size compared with my referance , but there is next to nothing in the cockpit and there is nodetail in the wheel bay area and as well it has raised detail , so its going to take some time to do up.

I have started the project by doing a little research on the plane and drawing some scale detail drawings with all the panel line detail , I have also been studying the cockpit drawings to determine where everything goes before I start building . I find the research step is essential when scratch building because it not only shows you all the stuff I need to build but pictures show me colour schemes and weathering on the aircraft etc.

Will keep you posted on things.[:D]see ya

Heres a quick look at some of my referance material that I’m using as a guide for the panel lines.
Sorry if its a bit blurry as it is my first time at posting pics!

[8D]Progress on my referance is going well and I’m nearly ready to start tackling the project soon maybe next weekend when i have some free time and I will post some pictures of the box content showing what will need to be changed.

see you then!

I’m looking at the contents of the box and here it is, it contains three sprues with light grey plastic, all the main peices have fine lightly raised panel lines which will need to be rescribed, the cockpit is made up of a seat and a pilot figure so ther will be lots of work needed on the cockpit , their is no wheel well detail and the gear is far to over sized , theirs only one option for the canopy which is too thick and distorted.
This projected is going to be a challenge but with a little work I think I can turn this kit into beauty.
I will post a picture of the contents when I get my stupid camera working!!..

Progress!
I have finally started work on the model. I’ve started sanding the inside of the fuselage so that I can get a smooth surface for fitting the cockpit into , the wings are being sanded down and the new cockpit is just being started , so when things are far enough ahead I will post some pictures as i have finally got my camera working (flat battery)!

What colours where the cockpits in the late Typhoons as I have no referance to them?

watching this one bro… good luck

Late Typhoon cockpit interiors were black, but in 1/72 scale a very dark grey would look better.

Regards, Rick

Where early bubble versions black for the interior as well?

Yes.

I’m sorry for the hold up in the build but the temperatures in my workspace have been fluctuating in the 40degree mark so its been nearly impossible to build , but the temperatures have gone down so I will be able to continue work on the cockpit and I might even have some pictures for you all see yo then!

I have this kit… you have A LOT of work to do…

Here here are some pictures of the starting constrution of my new cockpit alongside the cockpit detail that is provided with the kit?

Progress is going well and I will probably start constructing the back seat armour and the new cockpit seat , so I will update when I’m done.

Looks like a good start. Keep us posted.

Regards, Rick

Todays progress has been going slowly having barely done anything worthy of posting but i do have a long night ahead of me seeing as its new years eve so i might keep my self busy until midnight so I will keep you posted!

Progress continues slowly but steadily, here you can see the heel boards which are composed of 4 seperate parts along with the rear armour and if you can see it the firstrudder pedal which also is composed of 4 seperate pieces with the size of 2mm high and 1mm wide it was pretty hard to build but is to scale and looks good.
This will be my last post for a week as I am going on holiday ,so I will see you when I get back!!!

looks like a good start on the build to me. look forward to more.

joe

Well I’m back and ready to start pumping it out again so keep a look out for some new pictures and posts see you later!
