Airfix Decals for 1/72 Su-27

I’m building the Airfix 1/72 Su-27 Flanker. I’ve heard that decals for these are really bad. Is there anything I should keep in mind when I try to use them? Should I overspray them with lacquer? Should I not use MicroSol?
